iPhone 13 Review
iPhone 13 Review

The iPhone13 and iPhone13 small, which were released on September 14, 2021, are Apple’s newest flagship iPhones at a lower price point, and are available alongside the more costly iPhone13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The iPhone 13 and 13 mini are perfect for consumers who do not want professional-level photography features.

The iPhone13 Pro is one of the most powerful smartphones ever made.

Despite the increased camera hump and the lack of Touch ID, the newest iPhone is a beast with a fantastic display and cameras.

It’s also $100 less expensive than the similarly excellent iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The iPhone13 Pro, like every other iPhone, is available from practically every carrier in addition to Apple.

And the iPhone13 Pro is now on the market, with prices starting at $999 for the 128GB variant.

The 256GB model costs $1,099, while the 512GB model costs $1,299.

For the first time, Apple sells a 1TB iPhone 13 Pro for $1,499, which is the same price as a 13-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 CPU and a 512GB hard drive.

The 128GB iPhone13 Pro starts at £949 in the UK, rising to £1,049 for the 265GB model and £1,249 for the 512GB model.

If you have deep funds, the 1TB iPhone 13 Pro will set you back £1,449.

Review of the iPhone 13 Pro

The iPhone 13 Pro appears to be very identical to the iPhone 12 Pro, with the exception of two important differences: a larger camera hump and a smaller notch.

The first point is self-evident.

When sitting on a table or desk, the lenses and the square around them stand out fairly dramatically – the phone is far from flat.

However, the smaller notch is noteworthy. According to Apple, it’s around 20% smaller than the one we’re all used to. When you hold up the new phone next to an iPhone 12 Pro, you can certainly tell the difference.

Apple iPhone13 Pro (front); Apple iPhone 12 Pro

Although the decreased notch is a step in the right direction, I still find it unattractive. Because Apple is still betting big on Face ID, the notch is here to stay for the time being — under-display TrueDepth tech is probably still a ways off.

On that topic, Touch ID is a significant omission on the iPhone 13 Pro. According to rumors, Apple was exploring in-display fingerprint technology akin to what is found on many of the top Android phones.

In a world where the COVID-19 pandemic is still raging and many of us are strongly advised to wear masks, I believe Apple’s failure to provide an unlock option to Face ID remains a concern.

The solution offered in iOS 14.5 earlier this year is insufficient.

The iPhone13 Pro has a substantial frame made of stainless steel.

It seems heavier and more solid than the 7.19 ounces listed as the phone’s weight by Apple.

While my time with the phone has been limited, I did experience wrist and pinky tiredness while using it, more so than with my daily driver, the iPhone 12 Pro.

Because the design of the iPhone 13 Pro is mostly unaltered, it feels like an iterative upgrade over its predecessor rather than one that pushes the boundaries.

I believe Apple played it safe this year, focusing instead on display and camera improvements.

One thing to keep in mind is that, thanks to Apple’s new iPhone Self Service Repair kits, you may now perform your own repairs, but approach with caution as you will need some technical knowledge.

Review of the iPhone 13 Pro: Display

The iPhone 13 Pro has the same size OLED panel as its predecessor and packs a lot of pixels onto a screen that spans 6.1 inches diagonally.

This is the latest iteration of Apple’s Super Retina XDR technology, and it’s stunning.

Colors pop, contrast is high, and viewing angles are excellent.

The iPhone13 Pro’s display delivered in every way, whether I was playing the anime-inspired, saturated Genshin Impact or witnessing the harsh orange moments in the latter half of Blade Runner 2049.

Even vivid neon pinks, magentas, and purples in cyberpunk or retrowave imagery looked gorgeous.

Design

The iPhone 13 has a flat body similar to previous Apple devices, with some differences such as the back cameras being larger and positioned diagonally.

The iPhone’s Face ID True Depth sensor housing is 20% thinner yet 20% taller than its predecessors.

Midnight, Starlight, Product Red, Blue, Pink, and Green are the six colors offered on the iPhone13 and 13 Mini.

Apple introduced a new Green color option on March 8, 2022, at Apple’s Special Event “Peek Performance,” which became available on March 18.

Specifications

Hardware

The iPhone13 and iPhone13 Mini are powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic system on a chip.

The iPhone13 and 13 Mini have a 6-core CPU, a 4-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine, but the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have a 5-core GPU.

Display

The iPhone13 has a 6.1-inch (15 cm) display with Super Retina XDR OLED technology, a resolution of 25321170 pixels, a pixel density of around 460 PPI, and a refresh rate of 60Hz.

The iPhone13 Mini has a 5.4-inch (14-cm) display with the same technology, a resolution of 23401080 pixels, and a pixel density of approximately 476 PPI.

Cameras

The iPhone13 and 13 Mini both include three cameras: a front-facing camera (12MP f/2.2) and two back-facing cameras: a wide (12MP f/1.6) and an ultra-wide (12MP f/2.4).

Both rear-facing cameras include bigger sensors for increased light collecting, as well as new sensor shift optical image stabilization (OIS) on the main camera.

To engineer the larger sensors, the camera module on the back is positioned diagonally rather than vertically.

Apple’s latest computational photography engine, Smart HDR 4, is used in the cameras.

During capture, users can also select from a variety of photographic styles such as rich contrast, vivid, warm, and cold.

This is distinct from a filter, according to Apple, because it works intelligently with the image processing system during capture to apply local tweaks to an image, and the effects are baked into the photos, as opposed to filters, which may be removed after application.

The camera app also has a new setting dubbed Cinematic Mode, which allows users to employ artificial algorithms to rack focus between subjects and create shallow depth of field. It works in 1080p at 30 frames per second on the wide and front-facing cameras.

Software

At introduction, the iPhone13 and iPhone13 Mini came with iOS 15.

Repairability

Some iPhone 13 components are connected to the motherboard. If a paired component (e.g., screen, battery) is replaced by an independent repair shop, the user is notified.

After third-party replacement, the Face ID sensors stop working altogether, while Apple has removed this restriction in newer iOS releases.

To pair components, Apple technicians use a proprietary software application.

Is there going to be an iPhone 13?

The iPhone13 variants are available in 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch sizes, with the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 Pro being Apple’s smallest iPhone.

According to reports, this will be Apple’s final year offering the smaller size, as its predecessor, the iPhone 12 mini, did not sell well.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro

The iPhone 13 Pro costs $999, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max costs $1,099.

Although the two phones share the vast majority of functionality, there are a few variations between them other than screen size.

Our article explains the differences between the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max and helps you determine which of these two iPhone models is best for you.

Comparing the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have nearly identical key features.

Both phones include the same OLED Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion technology, the A15 Bionic chip, 5G connectivity, a “pro” camera configuration with 12MP Ultra Wide, Wide, and Telephoto lenses, a LiDAR Scanner, and come in the same colors.

Where the two gadgets vary is more interesting.

Differences

  • 6.1-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display with 2532-by-1170-pixel resolution
  • 22-hour movie playback battery life
  • 7.19 ounces (204 grams) in weight

Unlike the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, there are no extra camera enhancements with the larger model this year, implying that the gap between the two top devices is even less than normal.

Continue reading to get a deeper look at each of the features and discover how the iPhone 13 Pro compares to its larger sibling.

Display Size

The largest distinction between the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max is the size of their displays.

The iPhone 13 Pro features a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch display.

This implies that the larger phone can display more content on the screen, with app UI elements spread widely apart and objects like the keyboard being significantly larger.

The smaller phone, on the other hand, is easier to use with one hand.

The Control Center, for example, is easier to reach near the top of the screen, and users may feel more at ease swiping around iOS on a smaller display with a tighter grip.

The screens itself employ the same technology and have the same capabilities, such as ProMotion, however the iPhone 13 Pro will be preferred due to its better fit in the hand and easier one-handed operation.

Similarly, anyone seeking a larger display for media consumption would undoubtedly pick the iPhone13 Pro Max, which dwarfs practically all previous iPhone models.

Weight and Dimensions

Because it is a smaller phone, the iPhone13 Pro has a lower height and width than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The iPhone13 Pro is 6.6mm thinner and 14.1mm shorter than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Both phones have the same 7.65mm thickness.

The iPhone 13 Pro is substantially more pocketable than the iPhone 13 Pro Max due to its smaller size.

The weight of the two gadgets is another feature that distinguishes them.

The iPhone13 Pro weighs 36 grams (1.27 ounces) less than its larger sibling, totaling 204 grams (7.19 ounces). If you are concerned about fatigue from holding or carrying a heavier device, the iPhone 13 Pro may be a better option for you than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Life of the Battery

The battery life of the iPhone13 Pro and iPhone13 Pro Max is also different. According to Apple, the iPhone13 Pro can provide up to 22 hours of movie playback. Because the iPhone 13 Pro Max is larger, it can house a larger battery and hence has a longer battery life. This means that the iPhone13 Pro Max can apparently play video for up to 28 hours.

When streaming video, the iPhone13 Pro has a battery life of 20 hours and the iPhone13 Pro Max has a battery life of 25 hours.

When streaming music, the iPhone13 Pro has a battery life of 75 hours, compared to the iPhone13 Pro Max’s 95 hours.

Because mixed usage is heavier than video playback alone, real-world battery life for both devices is likely to be lower than Apple’s projections.

If battery life is important to you, the iPhone13 Pro Max certainly provides the best battery life in an iPhone and is a big improvement over the iPhone13 Pro.

If you acquire the iPhone 13 Pro, it will still offer a decent all-day battery life, but it will fall short of the capability of the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Other iPhone Alternatives

If the iPhone13 Pro’s starting price of $999 is beyond of your pricing range, try the iPhone 13, which starts at $799 ($699 for the iPhone 13 mini), or even the iPhone 12, which starts at $699 ($599 for the iPhone 12 mini).

We have a number of Buyer’s Guides that go over all of the differences between various iPhone models, so if you’re thinking about getting the iPhone13 Pro or iPhone13 Pro Max, check out our comparisons with the iPhone 12 and iPhone13 to make sure you’re making the correct choice

FAQs

What is the current price of the iPhone 13 Pro Max?

In Nigeria, the iPhone13 Pro Max costs between NGN900,000 and NGN1,400,000.

The international price will range between $1100 and $1600.

The device is available in four different storage capacities.

Why isn’t the iPhone 13 Pro Max available?

According to Bloomberg, Apple has been forced to reduce its production order for the iPhone13 by 11% due to the persistent global chip shortage.

This means that fewer gadgets will be available this holiday season than Apple had planned.

Is the iPhone 13 water resistant?

This indicates that the gadgets can survive water for up to 30 minutes at a depth of six meters (19.7 feet).

The iPhone 12 and iPhone13 have an IP68 water resistance classification, which implies they can withstand splashes, rain, and accidental water exposure, but purposeful water exposure should be avoided if possible.

Is the iPhone 12 cover compatible with the iPhone 13?

Not entirely.

The iPhone13 and iPhone13 mini have the same overall dimensions as the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, but the camera array on the new devices is somewhat bigger – by millimeters — which means that the existing cases won’t fit.

Can the iPhone 13 shoot photos underwater?

Yes, the iPhone 13 can take images underwater, but only up to a depth of 1 to 2 meters, so be careful. The new iPhones have been given an IP68/IP67 rating, indicating that they can survive water for 30 minutes at a depth of 2 meters and 30 minutes for a depth of 1 meter.

Conclusion

The screen size is the most crucial difference between the iPhone13 Pro and iPhone13 Pro Max, but comfort, pocketability, weight, and battery life are other important factors to consider. The $100 premium for the iPhone13 Pro Max appears reasonable given the increased display area and battery life, but it is crucial to consider these additional factors in your unique use case.

The iPhone13 Pro Max is the most you can get out of an iPhone in terms of battery life, but it does not always translate into a good purchase for all users.

A 6.7-inch iPhone that is larger and heavier is not for everyone.

Some may find the iPhone13 Pro Max’s size to be excessive or uncomfortably huge, but others will appreciate the larger display for media consumption.

Screen size is essentially a personal preference, and Apple provides the iPhone13 and iPhone13 Pro lineup in three distinct sizes to accommodate the demands of all consumers.

Because the iPhone13 Pro and iPhone13 Pro Max share practically all features except battery capacity, the decision comes down to personal preference.
