What exactly is Wordle? I’m sure you’ve heard about the viral word game that’s taking over the world by this point. However, if you’re curious about its roots, here’s everything you need to know.

What is Wordle?

Wordle is an online word game that you can play every day. It’s simple, enjoyable, and, like a crossword puzzle, can only be completed once per day. There’s a new word of the day every 24 hours, and it’s up to you to find out what it is. The rules are explained really well on the website:

Wordle gives players six chances to guess a five-letter word chosen at random. It appears green if you have the correct letter in the correct location.

A proper letter in the incorrect location appears yellow. A letter that isn’t part of the word in any way appears gray.

You can enter a total of six words, which means you can use five burner words to learn about the letters and their positions. Then you just have one chance to use those hints. You can also go for speed by guessing the word of the day in three, two, or even one attempt.

It’s simple, but it’s really captivating.

So is Wordle Game a Big deal?

It’s simply a word game, really. However, it is extremely popular: According to The New York Times, about 300,000 individuals play it every day.

That popularity may appear strange, but there are a few minor details that have caused everyone to go insane over it.

Every day, there is only one puzzle: This raises the stakes to a certain level. The Wordle is only available once. If you make a mistake, you’ll have to wait till tomorrow for a new problem.

Everybody is working on the same puzzle: This is important since it makes it easy to ping your buddy and talk about the puzzle for the day. “Today was a challenge!” “How did things go?” “Did you manage to obtain it?” This brings us to the next point:

It’s simple to share your results: You’re asked to share your Wordle adventure for the day once you’ve completed the puzzle for the day, whether successfully or badly. It looks like this if you tweet the image…

The word and letters you selected are concealed. Your path to the word is depicted in a series of yellow, green, and gray boxes.

It’s pretty interesting. There’s a gloating element where you have to show your followers how brilliant you are and share if you get it easy, perhaps on your second or third try.

It’s also a cool story if you get it by the skin of your teeth in the sixth attempt. But, most significantly, the puzzle isn’t revealed.

Wordle is more than a word game; it’s also a conversation starter and a way to brag on social media. That’s why it’s become so popular.

Tips and Tricks

If you’re a word game purist, you might want to skip the following suggestions and trust your gut. For anyone else who is tired of seeing gray boxes, here are some suggestions that you might find useful.

Selecting a First Word: The first word is, without a doubt, the most crucial. Choose a word with three vowels and five separate letters to maximize the value of your opening gambit. Orate, media, and radio are among the examples. For some reason, I always say “adieu.” It’s a habit I’m unwilling to quit.

I just finished reading a fantastic article by Tyler Glaiel, a programmer and game designer who attempted to find the best possible first word. We should all, apparently, start Wordle with the word “roate.” Seriously, read the entire story; it’s fantastic.

Do not reuse grays: At the bottom of the Wordle, the board is a keypad that reveals which letters are green, yellow, and gray. Reusing letters that have turned gray is not a good idea. Yes, this appears to be self-evident. However, coming up with five-letter words that don’t use letters you’ve already tried can take some time and effort. That work will be rewarded.

Letters can appear twice: This makes things more difficult, especially when you’re out of letters for words four or five.

However, letters frequently reoccur, since words like chill, sissy, and ferry were once accepted responses.

Who invented Wordle?

Wordle was designed by software programmer Josh Wardle for his partner, a word game aficionado, and according to the BBC, it will never be cluttered with advertisements. Wardle is most known for creating Place, a completely insane collaborative art project/social experiment that drove the internet into a frenzy in April 2017.

The place was a public online space where anyone could battle over anything was drawn there. As a result, massive, widespread communities fought for space on this massive online canvas.

Finally, it looked like this: Remember Place? That was an exciting moment.

Reddit

Wordle was mentioned in The New York Times in November, but it truly took off after the share feature was enabled.

Wardle described Wordle as a croissant, a “delightful nibble” that may be savored on occasion, in a Reddit post. This is the reason for only one puzzle per day. “If you enjoy them too much,” he explained, “they lose their allure,” Wardle says.

New York Times Acquisition

Josh Wardle, the creator of Wordle, sold it to the New York Times for “in the low seven figures” towards the end of January.

Wardle acknowledged that his “game has grown greater than I ever expected” and that he is “only one person.”

Although Wordle will eventually become part of the New York Times subscription puzzle service, Wardle has ensured that it will stay free to play and that existing streaks will be preserved.

“It’s critical to me that Wordle continues to provide a fantastic experience for everyone,” Wardle added. “In light of this, I’m overjoyed to say that I’ve secured an arrangement with The New York Times for them to continue to run Wordle.”

Since joining the New York Times, Wordle hasn’t gotten any harder.

It simply hasn’t happened! Come on, people!

According to Jordan Cohen, communications director for The New York Times, “nothing has changed about the gameplay.”

If you look at the game’s script, you’ll notice that the New York Times hasn’t made any major modifications.

Wordle Clones

There have been clones since Wordle’s breakthrough. There are numerous clones. Some of them were cynical money grabs, but a large number of them were unique and exciting alternatives.

  • Worldle asks you to guess countries by looking at their maps.
  • Squabble is a multiplayer Wordle Battle Royale game; Dordle requires you to solve two Wordles at the same time.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. If you get weary of the original, here’s a very thorough list of word games to try.

How Wordle Works

You are given five empty boxes to deal with in Wordle, and you must figure out a secret five-letter word that fits in those boxes. You only have six guesses to get it right.

Start with the best Wordle starting word (opens in a new tab), such as “RAISE,” which has three common vowels and no repetition letters. When you press Enter, the boxes will display the letters you got right or wrong.

If a box turns ⬛️, that letter isn’t included in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve nailed the letter, it’s in the word and the right spot.

As you’ll see in our top Wordle hints (opens in the new tab), in the next row, use what you learned from your prior guess to make your second guess. You have six tries and can only use real words (no EEEEE to see whether there’s an E in the box).

Josh Wardle, a software programmer, created Wordle as a surprise for his partner, who enjoys word games (opens in a new tab). It then spread to his family before being published to the general public. Since then, word puzzle games like Wordle (opens in a new tab) have sprung up, refocusing the daily gimmick on music, arithmetic, or geography.

Wordle quickly became so successful that it was purchased by the New York Times for seven figures (opens in new tab). It’s only a matter of time before we all converse only through multicolored boxes.

Wordle Gameplay

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen, and players have six tries to guess it. Each letter is colored green, yellow, or gray after each guess: green indicates that the letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow indicates that it is in the answer but not in the correct location, and gray indicates that it is not in the answer at all.

Excess repeated letters will be colored gray if they appear numerous times in the response, such as the “o”s in “robot.” The game includes a “hard mode” option that asks players to incorporate green and yellow letters in subsequent guesses. For everyone, the daily word is the same. The game also offers a dark and high-contrast theme for colorblind accessibility, which switches the color palette from green to yellow to orange and blue.

The game is conceptually and stylistically similar to Jotto, a 1955 pen-and-paper game, as well as the game show brand Lingo.

With the exception that Wordle validates the precise letters that are accurate, the gameplay is comparable to the two-player board game Mastermind—which featured a word-guessing variant called Word Mastermind —and the game Bulls and Cows. Every day, a word is chosen at random from a list of 2,315 words (out of the approximate 12,000 five-letter words in the English language). Wardle’s wife chose the smaller word list, which she divided into three categories: those she knew, those she didn’t know, and those she might have known. Despite the developer being from Wales and utilizing a UK domain name for the game, Wordle employs American spelling; he is a long-time resident of Brooklyn, New York.

Players from outside the United States have claimed that this spelling tradition unfairly favors American players, such as in the case of the solution “favor.”

Understanding Wordle Gameplay

The principle of Wordle is straightforward: you have six chances to guess a five-letter word, with new words to guess every day. After each guess, the letters in your word will provide hints to help you complete the problem. A green background on a letter indicates that you guessed the correct letter in the correct location. If you see a yellow backdrop, you’ve picked the correct letter, but it’s in the wrong place. Finally, letters with gray backgrounds do not appear in the word, so you can skip them in your subsequent guesses.

This adds up to just enough hints to figure out the word of the day after six turns.

It’s akin to playing a word detective game when you play Wordle. You’re always looking for methods to improve your estimates so you can get more information. These hints will help you enhance your subsequent attempts. By setting goals for each try, this procedure may be completed quickly and easily. You’ll crack the daily word if you know how to form your starting word and what methods to use afterward. Getting Started

While Wordle does not have a native app, you may pin the progressive web app to your home screen for an app-like experience that launches just like a native Android app.

How to get Wordle on your Android device

Warning: If you’ve been playing on another device or with a different mobile web browser, use this URL to keep your streaks.

  • To begin, open Google Chrome.
  • Go to https://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle/index.html to access Wordle’s homepage.
  • To open the overflow menu, click the three vertical dots in the upper right corner.
  • Select Add to Home Screen > Add from the drop-down menu.
  • Finish by tapping Add in the secondary pop-up; Wordle is now on your home screen.

How to Play Wordle

  • Launch the Wordle web app shortcut from your home screen.
  • The ruleset box in Wordle appears. To access the gaming, close the ruleset box once you’ve gone over the rules.
  • A blank 5 x 6 grid appears. Starting at the top, fill in each row with your word. New tries begin in the next row.

Enter any 5-letter common word using your keyboard and press Enter. Each letter in your word is highlighted (green, yellow, and gray), as are the keys on the keyboard that corresponds to it. To guess more 5-letter words, use these hints.

Keep the green letters in their current locations, and move the yellow letters to other locations before they turn green, all while avoiding the gray characters. You can only make six guesses.

  • The entire row is highlighted green if you guess the correct word. When you’re finished, you’ll see the word ‘impressive.’ You’ve completed the daily puzzle!
  • To play more puzzles, you must wait for the daily reset, as a new puzzle is released every day. When you start a streak, a box displaying your stats and a reset timer appear on the screen.

Wordle makes use of popular words. Vowels are your closest allies; your first term should incorporate as many common letters as possible. Choosing a default 5-letter term that meets the criteria is quite helpful. Don’t forget about the possibility of duplicate letters, but save them for later.

If you feel stuck, open your computer browser and look for a word list to get your wheels spinning again.

  • After completing a word puzzle, tap Share to share your results online.
  • Select Share to see other possibilities. You can share your result directly to an app or copy the text and paste it anywhere. There are no spoilers or personal data leaks because your results simply show colored boxes.
  • Alternatively, you can take a screenshot of your stats box, crop it, and post it as an image.
