Sprint Corporation (www.sprint.com) was a telecommunications firm based in the United States.
It was the fourth-largest mobile network operator in the United States as of June 30, 2019, until it merged with T-Mobile US on April 1, 2020.
Through its different subsidiaries, the firm also provided wireless phone, message, and broadband services under the Boost Mobile and Open Mobile brands, as well as wholesale access to its wireless networks to mobile virtual network operators.
Overview Sprint
SoftBank Group, a Japanese telecommunications business, obtained a majority stake in the company in July 2013.
It operated CDMA, EvDO, and 4G LTE networks, as well as iDEN, WiMAX, and 5G NR networks in the past.
It was founded in Kansas.
Its roots may be traced back to the Brown Telephone Company, which was created in 1899 to provide telephone service to the rural area surrounding Abilene, Kansas. They exited the local landline telephone industry in 2006 and spun off those assets into a new company called Embarq, which later became a part of Lumen Tech (previously CenturyLink), which is still one of the top long-distance providers in the United States.
Until 2005, the firm was known as Sprint Corporation, but it changed its name to Sprint Nextel Corporation after merging with Nextel Communications and adopting its black and yellow color scheme, as well as a new logo. Following the closure of the Nextel network and the acquisition by SoftBank in 2013, the firm resumed using the name Sprint Corporation.
They bought the remaining shares of wireless broadband carrier Clearwire Corporation that it did not already hold as part of the SoftBank deals in July 2013.
Marcelo Claure took over as CEO in August 2014, succeeding Dan Hesse.
Michel Combes took over for Claure in May 2018 and has been attempting to get Sprint’s merger with rival T-Mobile approved by regulators.
They concluded their merger with T-Mobile US on April 1, 2020, effectively making Sprint a subsidiary of T-Mobile until the Sprint brand was formally phased out.
Changes in leadership, background and stock occurred instantly, while customer-side changes occurred over time.
Its brand was officially phased out on August 2, 2020.
Billing already displayed the T-Mobile logo, and on this date, all retail, customer service, and other company branding moved to the T-Mobile logo.
New rate plans were also launched for both companies’ new and existing customers, albeit all will be grandfathered into their current plan for at least three years if they do not move to a new T-Mobile plan.

How to Unlock Your Sprint Phone
T-Mobile will buy Sprint in April 2020. As a result, we will no longer update this page, but you can read their entire T-Mobile review.
So you want to leave Sprint and take your phone with you? We understand. And, thankfully, getting your phone unlocked so you may switch to another network (or sell it, if that’s your goal) isn’t too difficult.
Before you unlock your phone
Before you get too excited about slipping in a new SIM card, be sure you meet its eligibility conditions. It requires you to first check off a few details.
Sprint unlock eligibility criteria
- Your phone has been on their network for more than 50 days.
- You have paid off your cell phone (if it was on a lease agreement).
- You have paid all of your bills and have no outstanding balances.
- Your phone was not reported stolen (awkward).
In addition, your phone must be “SIM unlocked.” Don’t be concerned if your phone is only a couple of years old. However, if you’re still using an iPhone 5 from 2013, you may have some difficulties.
What is SIM Unlock
SIM unlocking means that your phone carrier (in this case, they) can program your phone to function with SIM cards from other carriers. Any phone manufactured after 2015 ought to be competent to accomplish this, however, earlier devices must be double-checked.
How to unlock your Sprint phone
Excellent news! It’s possible that your phone is already unlocked. If you have a postpaid their plan (where you pay your bill at the end of the month), they will unlock your phone immediately once it is eligible.
If you are unsure whether it is unlocked, you can contact their Customer Care team. You’ll need to provide them with a few pieces of information so they can complete the procedure.
Before you call them, gather the following information.
- Your complete name (should be an easy one)
- The account number
- Your login information
- Your social security number’s last four digits
- The IMEI or MEID number of your phone. (You can generally find it on the back of your phone.)
You may also need to contact Customer Service if you purchased a Sprint phone from someone else and wish to switch carriers. Remember, you’ll still need all of that precise information, so make sure you acquire it from the buyer before closing that Craigslist sale.
Is it possible to use my Sprint phone with another carrier?
Yes, in a nutshell. However, not all carriers and not all phone functions are compatible with every carrier.
Cell phone companies connect your phone to their network using one of two technologies: GSM or CDMA. Sprint phones employ CDMA technology, thus they don’t always operate well with GSM networks.
Which phone carrier uses which connection type?
- Sprint – CDMA;
- Verizon – CDMA;
- AT&T – GSM; and
- T-Mobile – GSM
Sprint phones are the easiest to move to Verizon because they both use the same technologies to connect your phone. However, just because both carriers employ CDMA technology does not guarantee that every phone will work perfectly. Always double-check your phone’s ID number with the desired provider.
Not sure which carrier to go with?

What’s the difference between a prepaid plan and a postpaid plan?
After using the phone service, you pay your bill at the end of the month using a postpaid plan. The phone company will normally do a credit check before you can get a postpaid plan.
However, if you really want to avoid the credit check (or simply control how many calls or data you use), a prepaid plan may be a better option. Prepaid plans require you to pay for your phone service before you use it. There are no surprise mega-bills.
If I have a prepaid plan, how can I unlock my Sprint phone?
The main difference between prepaid and postpaid plans is that Sprint will not immediately unlock your phone. You must contact them (wamp). The eligibility criteria are also slightly varied.
Sprint Prepaid Plan Unlocking Requirements
- Your phone has been on the Sprint network for more than a year.
- Your smartphone has still not been reported stolen or lost.
If you fulfill the qualifying requirements, simply contact Sprint’s Customer Care staff to begin the unlocking process.
Is unlocking synonymous with jailbreaking?
No. Unlocking simply allows you to use your phone with various cell phone companies. Jailbreaking is the process of bypassing all of your phone’s useful security features in order to download apps that you would normally be unable to access.
For example, if you jailbreak your iPhone, you will be able to download apps that are not available in the Apple App Store.
What will happen to the T-Mobile and Sprint brands?
Both brands will continue to exist, and everything will eventually transition to T-Mobile.
For the first time, on August 2, both firms will merge under the T-Mobile brand.
Although T-Mobile will be the merged firm’s major brand in retail, digital, and advertising, Sprint customers will see the brands represented as a combined company in direct communications and on the Sprint website while completing Sprint account maintenance. Sprint customers’ account maintenance and administration will not change at this time!
Will there be any deals for new customers to switch to T-Mobile?
Yes! When you switch to T-Mobile, we have the following offers available:
On the Deals Page, you may find the most recent device offers. Switch to T-Mobile if you’re a Verizon or AT&T customer, and we’ll pay off your remaining device payments and/or service contracts with your prior carrier, up to $650 per line, via trade-in credit and a virtual prepaid card when you trade in your phone for a new one.
What will happen to the networks of Sprint and T-Mobile?
Customers and the country need strong, dependable network connectivity now more than ever. T-Mobile will provide the following services once the two networks are combined:
- Huge Capacity! In the next six years, it will have 14 times the capacity of T-Mobile alone, making it even better for streaming, gaming, downloading, and other activities.
- Breakneck speed! Customers will be able to receive average 5G speeds up to eight times faster than current LTE in a matter of years, and 15 times faster over the next six.
- Nearly everyone is reached! T-Mobile will offer 5G to 99 percent of the US population, including rural America, within six years.
- Our mission is to build the finest network for ALL.
What will happen with Sprint and T-Mobile retail stores?
As T-Mobile emerges as the newly combined company’s retail flagship brand, the majority of Sprint stores have been upgraded with T-Mobile branding and a fresh coat of magenta paint, while the majority of T-Mobile branded stores can serve both customers. Except for a few exclusions, our stores and workers can now serve Sprint and T-Mobile clients in addition to T-Mobile customers. Customers from the two merged companies can stroll into these stores and the personnel will be able to say, “Yes, we can help you!”
- National retailers such as Best Buy, as well as a small number of rural retailers, will continue to serve only Sprint customers.

Sprint Music Plus
Their Music Store was introduced on October 31, 2005.
EMI Music, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group were among the first record labels to participate.
After one year of operation, the store had sold more than 8 million songs, thanks in part to the five free tracks it promised clients at debut.
On April 1, 2007, the Sprint Music Store began delivering 99 cents per track music downloads to consumers who agreed to subscribe to a Vision pack of $15 or above.
Their Music Store has been decommissioned.
Their Music Plus, managed by RealNetworks, was relaunched in 2011.
It provides full-track audio files (albums and single tracks) from various labels, as well as ringback tones and ringtones.
Their Music Plus has been administered by OnMobile Global, a business based in Bangalore, India, since July 2013.
Google Play Store
Sprint subscribers can now charge Google Play app purchases to their phone account as of May 16, 2012.
Sprint Airave and Magic Box
Sprint Nextel released the Airave on September 17, 2007, which boosted mobile service over a 5,000 square foot (460 m2) area and could handle up to three calls at once by connecting to an existing internet connection and using VOIP.
The Airave aided in the elimination of poor signal quality inside buildings.
The Airave aided in the elimination of poor transmission strength inside buildings. Airave was only available for Sprint CDMA phones and was not available for Nextel iDEN phones or data cards/USB modems. The Airave unit by default allowed any Sprint mobile phone through it, but it could be adjusted to accept only connections from up to 50 authorized numbers to prevent unauthorized use.
The Airrave connects calls using the client’s own bandwidth, potentially lowering internet speeds on less abundant connections and requiring the customer to essentially subsidize the Sprint network.
Having said that, it is one of the only carriers that has never charged their customers for this type of equipment if the consumer can show that Sprint coverage is insufficient where they live.
Airave 2.0 is a gadget that can support up to six devices and data usage at the same time.
To generate the CDMA signal, the gadget requires a land-based internet service (such as DSL or cable modem).
The Airave 2.5 has two LAN connections and enhanced reliability.
Airave 3.0 is a device that broadcasts both CDMA and LTE on band 41 and was certified by the FCC in late 2016 and made available in 2017.
It requires a cable internet connection and has a WAN RJ45 port as well as two LAN RJ45 connections.
The Magic Box generates its own Band 41 LTE signal and uses it instead of a cable connection to connect to the internet.
It is intended to be put on a window sill and transmits to both the inside and outside of the building over a distance of 100 meters or more.
