Scanning documents is more of a daily event than a “once in a blue moon” activity. On your iPhone, you should have a third-party app (or two) installed to assist you with this task, whether it’s Microsoft Office Lens, Adobe Scan, Scanner Pro, or something else.

You, too, should unlock your iPhone, find the app, open it, scan the document, share it (if necessary), and then go about your business.
If this is the case, you will most likely have one less app on your iPhone after reading this post because your iPhone has a built-in document scanner. Your iPad does, too, but for the purpose of simplicity, we’ll refer to it as an “iPhone.”
Yes, you read that correctly. To scan a document, you don’t need any third-party software or other complicated methods. All you’ll need is an iPhone or iPad running iOS 11 or higher, as well as these simple instructions:

Step 1: Locate the Notes app on your iPhone and open it ~ Scan Documents on iPhone
It’s a stock app, which means you don’t have to download it from the App Store. Your device already has it installed. It’s as simple as finding it and opening it.
You might not even need to unlock your iPhone if you’ve added Notes to your Control Center (click that link to learn how), and you can open a new note right from your Lock Screen.
Step 2: Create a new note ~ Scan Documents on iPhone
Once the Notes app is open, tap the ‘tiny note and pencil’ icon in the bottom right corner of your screen. You will be given a fresh note to work on.
Step 3: Tap the little Camera ~ Scan Documents on iPhone
When you have a new note open in front of you, a line of five distinct options will appear above your keyboard. If you don’t see these options, look above the keyboard for a little “+” icon that you must tap to access them. A ‘camera’ icon can be seen among these selections. You must press the button.

Tapping on the camera icon brings up three options:
“Select photo to video,”
“Choice photo to Video,” and “Scan Documents”.

To use an auto shutter, simply point your camera at your paper for long enough for it to grasp the edges and it will then snap a picture, which will be scanned.

Once you’ve decided to keep the scan, the app will return to the camera and allow you to scan more papers if necessary. If you’re scanning numerous documents at once, you can click “Keep scanning” each time and save them all as a single PDF at the end. When you’re done, click Save in the lower right corner of your screen, and the PDF will be saved in the note you started with.
Step 7: Share (if necessary) ~ Scan Documents on iPhone
You can share this scanned document by opening the Note, tapping on the scanned document, and then tapping the arrow in the top right corner.
Choose which app you want to send it to and who you want to send it to, and voila! The PDF version of your document is now available to you and your buddy.

Of course, you should keep in mind that this isn’t a solution that offers as many editing and layout possibilities as some third-party document scanner tools.
But most of us only need a quick scanner, and the iPhone’s Notes app is more than adequate for that purpose. They say there’s an app for everything, but in a world with so many apps, we could always use one less, as long as the user isn’t jeopardized. And this little tip can help you get closer to your objective.
