Ozark Series

Ozark is a Netflix original crime drama series written by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams and produced by MRC Television and Aggregate Films.

Marty and Wendy Byrde, a married couple who relocate their family to the Lake of the Ozarks for money laundering, is played by Jason Bateman and Laura Linney in the series.

Bateman also serves as the series director and executive producer.

The first season premiered on July 21, 2017, the second season on August 31, 2018, and the third season on March 27, 2020.

The first three seasons each have ten episodes.

The series was renewed for a fourth and final season in June 2020, consisting of fourteen episodes split into two parts; the first half was published on January 21, 2022, and the second on April 29, 2022.

Throughout its run, Ozark earned great reviews from critics, with special praise for its tone, directing, production values, and acting (particularly those of Bateman, Linney, and Julia Garner).

The series has received 32 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including two for Outstanding Drama Series, with Bateman winning Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in 2019 and Garner receiving Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series twice in a row in 2019 and 2020. Bateman has been nominated for two more Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor – Television Series Drama.

Because of tax benefits granted by the state of Georgia, the majority of the shooting venues are in the Atlanta area, at Lake Allatoona and Lake Lanier, rather than at the Lake of the Ozarks. After thoroughly researching the Alhonna Resort location, the film crew built a set in Georgia. Some parts are shot on site in Chicago. The series was also shot in Georgia, including Berkeley Lake, Stone Mountain, Savannah, Norcross, Johns Creek, and Peachtree Corners.

For the first three seasons, Ben Kutchins was in charge of the cinematography. The series was shot with the Panasonic VariCam at first, then switched to the Sony Venice for season 3 and beyond. The series is well-known for its unusual color grading, which has rich blue hues, dark lighting, and deep shadows.

According to Kutchins, the cinematography is meant to entice viewers to “[look] around the frame to see what’s lurking in the shadows.”

The series’ visual design was brightened and its color pallet enlarged beginning with the third season to match the significant new settings of the casino and Navarro’s home.

The fourth season began filming on November 9, 2020 and ended on October 8, 2021.

Ozark Season 1

The first season has a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 69 reviews, with an average rating of 6.8/10. “Ozark hasn’t yet achieved the same level as the classic crime dramas to which it will surely be compared,” the website’s critics agreed, “but its satisfyingly intricate plot – and a captivating performance from Jason Bateman – promise more potential.” It has a weighted average score of 66 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 29 critics, indicating “generally good reviews.”

“While the fish-out-of-water theme is one of TV’s oldest, Ozark carves out its route with smart twists—including a late-in-the-run flashback detailing how the cartel got into his life—and the sheer quality of the performers,” noted Brian Lowry of CNN.

It is “clever, well-crafted, and says something,” according to Variety TV writer Sonia Saraiya, and the series “comes together under Bateman’s affable and deceptively complex portrayal as Marty.” “Laura Linney is, as ever, brilliant,” remarked Tim Dowling of The Guardian.

Uproxx’s Alan Sepinwall criticized the series for its lack of humor (which he compared unfavorably to Breaking Bad) and failure to distinguish itself sufficiently from numerous other contemporary shows about anti-heroes, stating that “Your show needs something special to be worth the bother — especially when too many shows are demanding too much patience from their viewers, with not enough reward — and Ozark doesn’t deliver the goods.” Despite his poor assessment, Sepinwall praised Julia Garner’s performance as Ruth as the series’ highlight.

Ozark Season 2

On Rotten Tomatoes, the second season has a 76 percent approval rating based on 45 reviews, with a 6.6/10 average rating. “Engaging and enjoyable – if not very challenging – Ozark’s fall into darker seas is kept afloat by another outstanding turn from Laura Linney,” said the website’s critics. It has a weighted average score of 59 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 14 critics, indicating “mixed or mediocre reviews.”

According to Mashable’s Alison Foreman, the female characters are more than just “emotional fodder” for the male characters. “Season 2 of Netflix’s Ozark, however, champions female stories through all 10 of its episodes with an array of women that rivals the ensemble complexity of HBO’s The Sopranos,” she says.

Ozark Season 3

The third season has a 98 percent acceptance rating based on 48 reviews, with an average rating of 8.2/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. “Ozark finds its feet in the third season, which ramps up the suspense and casts a brighter spotlight on Laura Linney’s superb performance,” said the website’s critics. It has a weighted average score of 77 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 12 critics, indicating “generally good reviews.”

Ozark Season 4

The fourth season has an acceptance rating of 85 percent based on 56 reviews, with an average rating of 7.9/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Ozark hasn’t come out clean just yet, but its mesmeric performances and tense tension hint that the Byrde clan are as entertainingly resourceful as ever,” said the website’s critics.

Ozark Season 4 Part 1

The first half of the season has a Metacritic score of 78 out of 100 based on 14 critics, indicating “generally good reviews.”

Part 1 of the fourth season was acclaimed by critics for its script, suspense, and acting, with many singling out Linney.

CNN’s Brian Lowry lauded showrunner Chris Mundy for “impressively navigating the tale from one insurmountable corner to the next,” saying that the season “unfold[s] with a continuous sense of dread.”

Part 1 received a five-star rating from Stuart Jeffries of The Guardian, who praised Linney’s “chilling” performance and compared Wendy’s trajectory to Lady Macbeth’s.

The additions of Damien Young and Adam Rothenberg to the main cast were commended by Nandini Balial of RogerEbert.com, and Garner’s portrayal as Ruth “will go down in history as one of the finest ever seen on television or streaming platforms.”

Linney’s acting was described as “bristling” and “mesmerizing” by Ben Travers of IndieWire, but he felt that the first half of the season was “pretty predictable” and that the tension was “diminished by [being] Part 1.”

Variety’s Daniel D’Addario had a more mixed reaction, believing that the series’ pleasures “solely exist in the world of narrative growth – or, rather, plot intensification,” describing the first half of the season as “all incident, little drama.”

He did, however, appreciate Linney, calling Wendy one of the series’ “few intriguing innovations,” as well as Garner, whose performance he felt was marked by an “outsized bleakness.”

Ozark Season 4 Part 2

The second season has a Metacritic score of 73 out of 100 based on 14 critics, indicating “generally good reviews.”

Ruth Langmore

Ruth Langmore is a key character in the Netflix series Ozark, played by Julia Garner.

She is 19 years old when the series begins, and she first appears in season 1 after stealing money from the family’s room at the Lazy O Motel.

Ruth, tough as nails with a sailor’s mouth, can hold her own in most situations.

While she is involved in the Langmore business of petty larceny, working for Marty Byrde and understanding the laundering industry truly unleashes her ambitious nature, and many who come to know her are immediately intimidated by her biting intelligence and business knowledge. She is wary of most people and has a sharp sense of discernment.

Ruth, on the other hand, has a tender side, especially when it comes to her cousins Wyatt and Three. She is constantly striving for a better life for them all and is deeply troubled by the deaths of Boyd and Russ.
