Oculus Quest 2 – Best All-in-One Virtual Reality Gaming System

Oculus Quest 2 is one of the best VR headsets for both newcomers and seasoned VR veterans.

In fact, we’d go so far as to say it’s a must-have device if you want a top-tier VR system that doesn’t require the extra wires, large money, or added complication of a PC-based VR setup, such as the HTC Vive or now-discontinued Oculus Rift S.

But how long will it be at the top of the VR heap? At the Connect event last October, Facebook (now Meta) introduced their next VR headset, Project Cambria.

At the time, the corporation stated that this new device will house innovative technologies that will aid in the establishment of its ambitious ‘metaverse.’

It’s expected to come later this year, but for the time being, Meta’s Quest 2 VR device reigns supreme.

What is Oculus Quest 2?

Oculus Quest 2 (rebranded Meta Quest 2 in November 2021) is a Facebook Reality Labs virtual reality (VR) headset (formerly Oculus).

It is the successor to the Oculus Quest, the company’s previous headset.

The Quest 2 was revealed during Facebook Connect 7 on September 16, 2020.

The Quest 2, like its predecessor, can function as a standalone headgear with an internal, Android-based operating system, as well as with Oculus-compatible VR software running on a desktop computer when connected through USB or Wi-Fi.

It is a redesigned version of the original Oculus Quest, with a reduced weight, updated internal specifications, a faster refresh rate and per-eye resolution display, and improved Oculus Touch controllers.

As an incremental improvement to the Quest, the Quest 2 garnered mainly excellent reviews, although some of its changes were criticized, notably its strap, limited interpupillary distance (IPD) settings, and a new requirement for users to log in with a Facebook account to use the headset and Oculus services.

Oculus Quest 2 Price and Availability

The Oculus Quest 2 is available in two sizes: a 128GB model for £299 / $299 / AU$479 and a 256GB model for £399 / $399 / AU$639.

Pre-orders are already available on the Oculus website, with full retail availability beginning on October 13, 2020.

That’s a considerable discount from the original entry-level Oculus Quest model’s launch pricing.

It’s not inexpensive, but since it’s a self-contained experience that doesn’t require a PC, console, or even an additional screen to use, it represents excellent value.

Oculus Quest 2 Design
  • Self-contained VR headset
  • Improved quality screen and processing
  • Controllers with twice battery life and thumb rest places

The Oculus Quest 2 is worn on the head in the same way as a dive mask is.

Instead of a dive mask’s glass, there’s a cushioned hollow that housing a pair of goggle-like lenses that sit in front of a screen, providing stereoscopic 3D graphics.

With the headset’s motion sensors and accelerometers, you can move your head and see your movements reflected in real-time on the digital screen in front of you, just as if you were looking out the window and moving around in the actual world.

It’s a lightweight design comparable to the initial Oculus Quest (now available in white plastic rather than dust-hugging, fabric-covered black), with an outside shell containing external cameras that help track your and the supplied controllers’ positions.

The headset is secured with a velcro, slightly elasticated fabric strap, which is a departure (not necessarily for the better) from the more rigid rubberized original.

Internally, the Quest 2 headset outperforms the original Quest headset significantly. When compared to the original Quest, the Quest 2 has 6GB of RAM instead of 4GB, and it’s powered by a considerably quicker Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 CPU. This enables for higher fidelity in Quest 2 experiences, as well as increased resolutions and refresh rates.

The original Oculus Quest used dual 1440 x 1600 resolution OLED screens (one for each eye), however the Quest 2 uses a single LCD panel split so that each eye has an 1832 x 1920 pixel resolution.

That’s around 50% sharper than the original, and while we like the richness of an OLED display in general, we didn’t miss it here.

LCD also provides developers with a higher refresh rate of 90Hz, compared to the original Quest’s 72Hz – with an experimental function increasing it up to 120Hz.

It will be a noticeably smoother experience where it is supported.

However, the Interpupillary distance (IPD, or the gap between your pupils) slider on the Quest 2 has changed.

Previously, fine adjustments could be made using a slider on the underside of the original Quest.

You must now physically shift the goggles over three pre-set distances of 58mm, 63mm, and 68mm.

While most people won’t notice a change (the three settings cover the most frequent IPD ranges), it’s unfortunate that more delicate control has been sacrificed.

The Quest 2 accomplishes all of this while maintaining the same 2-3 hour battery life as the original Quest, depending on the application.

That may not seem like much, but extended play sessions are unlikely to be pleasant.

Oculus has accomplished this through major advancements to its tracking algorithms, which also extend to the controllers, which now have twice the battery life (weeks of continuous play) as their predecessors.

Oculus Quest 2 Black Friday

In November, Black Friday Oculus Quest 2 offers provided some of the most exciting savings of the year, but what can we expect for 2022’s offerings? This year, we expect packages to bear the brunt of the discounts. However, given that the headset will have been on the market for an additional year by the time Black Friday gaming offers come around in 2022, Oculus Quest 2 deals may finally offer some cash off the headgear. That’s a really optimistic prediction – at $299, this is already a reasonably priced headset. However, if you’re going to save money on the base price this year, Black Friday Oculus Quest 2 deals are likely to be the reason.

Oculus Quest 2 128GB: The Goldilocks size

The smaller storage version of Oculus Quest 2 supports all of the same functions and games as the larger storage version.

Since Oculus increased the base model’s storage capacity from 64GB to 128GB, it’s easy to recommend the more cheap Quest 2 as the best option.

For

  • Cheaper
  • Compatibility with all of the same features and games
  • Supports all of the original Oculus Quest games.

Against

  • No microSD card slot for expanding storage
Oculus Quest 2 256GB: More room to roam

The 256GB storage capacity of the Oculus Quest 2 allows you to play 20 to 50 Oculus Quest games before running out of space. There’s enough room to download a movie for offline watching, but don’t go overboard because there’s no microSD card slot. Aside than that, this edition has no unique characteristics.

For

  • More space for gaming
  • Additional storage capacity for media
  • Supports all of the original Oculus Quest games.

Against

  • 33 percent more expensive
  • There is no microSD card slot for expanding storage.
Best Oculus Quest 2 Accessories for 2022

Here are some of our favorite Meta Quest 2 accessories, including eye-pad coverings, controller grips, enhanced head straps, and much more.

Nufr Shell Front Face Protector

A face cover will provide some protection for the Quest 2 head unit (yes, they have been known to be dropped).

The Nufr is available in a variety of colors for roughly $16, with prices ranging slightly per color.

Esimen K3 Accessories Set

I didn’t want to spend $50 on the official Elite Head Strap when I was trying to upgrade to a “elite”head strap for my virtual reality experience. I was seeking for a Quest accessory package that included a carrying case and came across this one from Esimen.

So far, everything is holding up nicely after a month of use. However, the Elite Head Strap and official Quest 2 Carrying Case offer a more premium look and feel (whether they’re worth the extra money is debatable).

Quest 2 Elite Strap

If you want a more pleasant gaming experience, consider upgrading to a “elite” strap. I first purchased the phony Esimen accessory set. That’s nice, but I’ll say the official elite strap version is superior (it’s not twice as good, but it’s a step up from the elite strap imitation I got). All you have to do is pay a premium for it.

VeeR Oculus Quest 2 Accessories Bundle

Many VR games are intended to make you sweat.

That’s why a silicone or faux leather face mask that you can easily wipe off after each gaming session is a fantastic option.

I purchased a Vokoo bundle with a controller grip set and a lens cover.

(It is critical to protect your lenses from the sun and from being bumped.)

Everything fit well and works perfectly, so there are no issues, but the Vokoo bundle is no longer available.

VirtuClear Prescription Lenses

You can play the Quest 2 with wearing glasses, although it is more comfortable without them.

This is when a pair of prescription lens inserts comes in handy.

Oculus has partnered with FramesDirect to offer such Rx inserts, with VirtuClear inserts starting at $80. Other Oculus VR Rx lens inserts, such as those from VR Lens Lab and WidmoVR, are available, but I’ve only tried the VirtuClear lenses. They function nicely and are simple to remove, allowing anyone who does not need glasses to play.

Other Oculus Quest 2 Accessories include:

  • Quest 2 Carrying Case
  • AMVR Table Tennis Paddle Grip Handle
  • VR Mat
  • Crossmeta VR Sweat Masks (3-Pack)
  • Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset
  • Logitech G333 VR Gaming Earphones for Quest 2
  • Anker Charging Dock
  • BMTick Comfort Strap and Magnetic Battery Dock
  • Pale Blue Earth Rechargeable Batteries
  • Orzero VR Lens Protect Cover
  • KRX 20-foot USB-C Link Cable
  • Aukey Basix Mini USB-C Power Bank
  • Nayoya Weighted Gloves (Update: Currently Unavailable)
Best Oculus Quest 2 Games, Apps and Experiences

Art, fitness, multiplayer sports, virtual theater, and weird realms are just a few examples.

Here’s what you should look at first.

Moss: Book 2

Moss was one of my favorite VR games, and it’s been a Quest classic for a while.

There is now a sequel, and the graphics are much better with Quest 2 headsets.

The gameplay, which entails guiding a sword-wielding mouse hero named Quill on a quest to defend her world, is mostly the same:

Navigate enormous small worlds while solving puzzles.

It’s a wonderful sit-and-play experience that’s also enjoyable to share with family.

Tentacular

Devolver’s cute VR game transforms you into a sea creature who lives near a beach.

Tentacles are your hands. You’ll find yourself flipping your sucker-filled arms to grab stuff and try to help your little cartoony folks as you navigate a dollhouse-sized environment all around you.

Virtuoso

A bunch of wild VR instruments you’ve never seen before, recording tools and the ability to multitask —

Virtuoso is more than a toy; it’s a virtual reality music platform.

It’s relaxing and enjoyable to play for pleasure on the fly, but delving deeper is also unexpectedly gratifying.

It’s incredibly cool to play with drums, a strange VR xylophone, and a Theremin-like music cube side by side.

Vermillion

Vermillion focuses on the canvas rather than sculpting or sketching in 3D, like many VR art apps do.

It’s strange to paint with a palette and an easel, especially if you utilize the mixed-reality mode to make the painting appear to be in your home. Bringing up video tutorials while painting feels like a glimpse into our AR-overlaid future, and it may be quite relaxing.

Puzzling Places

I had no idea how a VR jigsaw puzzle would feel or if I’d be interested in playing one. While I dislike the game’s restricted amount of puzzles and odd interface, the 3D environments that you may piece together (with up to hundreds of parts per puzzle) are strangely fascinating. Please, more!
