New Movies – It’s official: the sequel will be released in 2022.

For years, franchise films controlled the box office, but the epidemic compressed the previous two years’ worth of blockbusters into one record-breaking year (apart from the films that are being delayed yet again until 2023).

These are the most recent release dates for huge films (and perhaps a few lesser ones) entering theatres and streaming services in 2022 and beyond.

Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are two recent superhero films, with Black Panther sequel Wakanda Forever due out later this year.

Jurassic World: Dominion and Avatar 2: The Way of Water are two older franchises. Fortunately, there are also unique films, such as Jordan Peele’s Nope, Everything Everywhere All At Once and David O. Russell’s Amsterdam, which features an incredible ensemble of enormous names.

However, there are still delays: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Rock’s Black Adam, Aquaman 2, Madame Web, and The Flash have all been delayed. Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 have been put back several times.

Keeping up with all of the changes has been difficult. However, we have the most recent US release dates for 2022 covered. If these dates are still subject to change, we’ll keep you updated when new dates are released.

The 10 best new movies 2022 right now:

1. A Love Song

Release Date: July 29, 2022

Director: Max Walker-Silverman

Stars: Dale Dickey, Wes Studi, Michelle Wilson, Benja K. Thomas, John Way, Marty Grace Dennis

Rating: PG

Runtime: 81 minutes

My grandfather died just before the epidemic.

In the midst of all, my grandmother met someone.

My family didn’t approve of her new connection, but it made her as happy as a schoolgirl—finding another cowboy to look at animals with, play cards with, and cook supper with.

She used to live in a trailer that was hauled out into the woods and bricked into the ground when I was a kid.

I see a lot of her in A Love Song, writer/director Max Walker-magnificent Silverman’s debut, in which a widow and widower find a teenage enthusiasm for one other—weathered but not beaten in the sun of the American west.

2. Nope

Release Date: July 22, 2022

Director: Jordan Peele

Stars: Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun

Rating: R

Runtime: 130 minutes

Jordan Peele enjoys the melodrama of a good biblical reference, which is one of his most humorous directorial quirks:

The murderous doppelgänger automobile of 2019.

Us often mentions Jeremiah 11:11 in his recent work. No, it begins with Nahum 3:6: “I will cover you in hideous dirt, render you ugly, and make you a spectacle.”

That final sentence pervades Nope, a clever, tactile story about a brother-sister ranching combination on the hunt for video evidence of a UFO orbiting their house.

3. Athena

Release Date: September 23, 2022

Director: Romain Gavras

Stars: Dali Benssalah, Sami Slimane, Anthony Bajon, Ouassini Embarek, Alexis Manenti

Rating: R

Runtime: 97 minutes

More than a decade has passed since Romain Gavras packed his raw music video for “No Church in the Wild” with Molotov cocktails, stolen police horses, and dropkicked riot shields—visual hallmarks of protest heroics—and the only thing that has changed is our familiarity with the aftermath.

The wrath in these photographs is still burning, but we know the chilly comfort left behind when the flames are ultimately extinguished.

However, the only thing to do is rekindle the fire, which Gavras accomplishes in the compelling, crucial Athena.

4. Goodbye, Don Glees!

Release Date: September 14, 2022

Director: Atsuko Ishizuka

Stars: Natsuki Hanae, Yuki Kaji, Ayumu Murase, Kana Hanazawa, Rino Sashihara, Atsushi Tamura

Rating: PG

Runtime: 94 minutes

The gnats are swarming, the fireworks are blazing, and it’s time to gather the lads for one more summer celebration. The idea of Goodbye, Don Glees!, writer/director Atsuko Ishizuka’s first original movie, Goodbye, Don Glees!, is a touch corny at first glance. However, there is much to appreciate, much like the nectar of succulent flowers in full bloom.

5. Blonde

Release Date: September 16, 2022

Director: Andrew Dominik

Stars: Ana de Armas, Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel, Evan Williams

Rating: NC-17

Runtime: 166 minutes

Marilyn Monroe may be seen everywhere: in tributes, parodies, and homage; in excerpts from her films, chopped into famous segments that make them instantly identifiable even to people who haven’t seen them; and in melancholy reminiscences of stars who died too young. “It’s like a jigsaw puzzle, but you’re not the one who puts it together,” explains Ana de Armas’ Marilyn in Blonde.

6. Barbarian

Release Date: September 9, 2022

Director: Zach Cregger

Stars: Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, Justin Long

Rating: R

Runtime: 102 minutes

The deceptively basic idea of Barbarian, writer/director Zach Cregger’s horror debut, is enough to give you shivers.

7. When I Consume You

Release Date: August 16, 2022

Director: Perry Blackshear

Stars: Libby Ewing, Evan Dumouchel, MacLeod Andrews

Rating: NR

Runtime: 92 minutes

When I Consume You, a new film by Perry Blackshear, would have been an excellent title for a Shudder cookery show: Creatures of the night gorily prepare expired foodstuffs using eldritch procedures established by the old gods themselves. But it works well for the film as well, with Blackshear meticulously doling out new story updates minute by minute. “When I swallow you” is a macabre vow, followed by a threat, followed by a promise that has the weight of inevitability.

8. Dos Estaciones

Release Date: September 9, 2022

Director: Juan Pablo González

Stars: Teresa Sánchez, Rafaela Fuentes, Tatín Vera, Manuel García-Rulfo

Rating: NR

Runtime: 99 minutes

The lush, rolling hills of Western Mexico serve as the backdrop for Juan Pablo González’s Dos Estaciones, the director’s debut narrative feature.

The rows of agave plants that dot the highlands are what bring the picture to life, since the succulent plant’s most coveted byproduct—tequila, named after the town in Jalisco where it was first distilled—is the lifeblood of the film’s namesake, a tequila distillery called Dos Estaciones.

9. Prey

Hulu Release Date: August 5, 2022

Director: Dan Trachtenberg

Starring: Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope

Rating: R

Runtime: 100 minutes

Prey, the Predator prequel directed by Dan Trachtenberg, succeeds by daring to embrace what previous sequels did not: simplicity.

The fundamentals of Predator movies are skull trophies and competitive battle, but most importantly, the excitement of an unbroken pursuit.

Writer Patrick Aison adapts Predator codes to hunter-gatherer dichotomies in Native American societies with deadly ease.

Nothing worse than the principles of natural hierarchies in their most rudimentary manifestations, which Prey acknowledges with terrifying reverence.

Trachtenberg understands what Predator fans want and delivers without hesitation.

10. Hold Me Tight

Release Date: September 9, 2022

Director: Mathieu Amalric

Stars: Vicky Krieps, Arieh Worthalter, Anne-Sophie Bowen-Chatet, Sacha Ardilly

Rating: NR

Runtime: 97 minutes

A woman (Vicky Krieps) gets up, gathers her belongings, and rushes away from her family.

She takes a road trip in the red family vehicle, imagining what her family members are up to while she is gone.

Clarisse imagines herself supporting her daughter Lucie (Anne-Sophie Bowen-Chatet) as she studies piano, seeing her son Paul (Sacha Ardilly) measure his rising height, and chatting in hushed tones to her husband (Arieh Worthalter) about love and grief as she drives toward the sea.

They sometimes respond to her, sometimes not, as the boundary between what is real, imagined, and simply recollection becomes deliriously blurred.

Hold Me Tight is a visual and aural poetry adapted from Claudine Galea’s unproduced play that conveys the complexities of how we interact with loved ones over time, location, loss, and memory.
