1. ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ Movies to Watch
When Black Sabbath went on tour in support of their 1983 album Born Again, not much went right.
They’d been through three lead singers in four years, and ticket sales had been abysmal.
Because the album’s second song is titled “Stonehenge,” they commissioned a replica of the monument for the event.
The completed piece was so large that it couldn’t be accommodated on most stages.
Geezer Butler, the band’s bassist, confided in the screenwriters of This Is Spinal Tap, who were working on a revolutionary mockumentary about a similar British band.
The film, directed by Ron Reiner, had a large audience but touched a bit too close to home for many rock stars, though we’ve never heard of any band being given second billing to a puppet performance.
2. ‘Caddyshack’
In the 1980s, Harold Ramis had an incredible run, penning Ghostbusters, Back to School, Stripes, and directing National Lampoon’s Vacation.
He began the decade with writing and directing Caddyshack, a slobs vs. snobs comedy about a gang of country club golfers.
It helped establish Rodney Dangerfield as a film star and relaunched Chevy Chase’s film career following a string of flops in the 1970s.
Chase was the only star of the picture who was dumb enough to sign on for the abominable Caddyshack II in 1988. That guy isn’t always the smartest decision maker.
3. ‘Young Frankenstein’
Mel Brooks opted to satirise monster movies with Young Frankenstein after imitating Westerns with Blazing Saddles in 1974.
Gene Wilder portrays Dr. Frankenstein’s grandson, who journeys to Transylvania after inheriting his father’s land.
He is embarrassed of his family’s past, but when the monster is released, he is immediately drawn into the lunacy.
It was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2007 and performed for just more than a year.
4. ‘Animal House’
Long before the label “National Lampoon’s” denoted a low-budget, crappy film like National Lampoon Presents Dorm Doze or National Lampoon’s Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj, it was a symbol of exceptional quality.
In the 1970s, National Lampoon magazine produced one fantastic issue after another, and because many of the authors were recent college grads, they decided to compose a screenplay based on their own experiences.
With the exception of Saturday Night Live star John Belushi, the film was directed by John Landis, who cast mostly unknowns as the students. He attempted to cast Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd, but they all declined.
That was a bad decision since the picture became an instant hit, laying the framework for other 1980s knock-off flicks about a wacky group of college kids against a wicked dean.
5. ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’
Monty Python was at the height of their career when they decided to shoot a film parodying King Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail during a break between seasons of their BBC sketch show.
Their debut film, And Now for Something Completely Different, was simply a compilation of doodles made in 1971.
They aimed far higher this time and kept to a single notion.
The end result was an amazing gem that quickly drew a dedicated plot.
In 2005, it was even adapted into a Broadway musical.

6. ‘Airplane!’
Leslie Nielsen was a dramatic actor before playing Dr. Rumack in this slapstick comedy that altered his career and the face of comedy in general.
Airplane!, which was made on a shoestring budget in 1979, spoofs the many catastrophe films of the day and manages to squeeze a staggering number of humour into 87 minutes.
Since the film’s release in the summer of 1980, lines like “of course I’m serious, and stop calling me Shirley” have been repeated around 500,000 times.
There were many wonderful comedic movies that came after Airplane, and some, like Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad, came very close, but none have exceeded it!
7. ‘Blazing Saddles’
The Hollywood Western was on its final legs in 1974 when Mel Brooks decided to produce this satire, which completely violated all of the genre’s tropes.
Cleavon Little portrays a black sheriff in an all-white community being pushed out to make way for a new railroad line. There is no attempt to be historically accurate, and it even includes a cameo by Count Basie as himself and a joke about Adolf Hitler. More significantly, it is incessantly ridiculous. There has been talk of adapting it into a Broadway play, similar to The Producers and Young Frankenstein, but this has yet to materialise. Perhaps this is better left as a film.

1. The Exorcist (1973)
You might not agree that The Exorcist is the scariest movie ever, but it’s hardly surprising that it’s at the top of our list – with a staggering 19% of all votes given.
William Friedkin’s adaptation of the eponymous novel about a demon-possessed boy and his attempts to exorcise the demon.
This became the highest-grossing R-rated horror picture of all time and the first to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards (it earned nine other nominations and took home two trophies).
Aside from its critical and economic success, the picture is well-known for inciting mass hysteria across the country.
Ranging from demonstrations against the film’s contentious subject matter to widespread reports of nausea and fainting in the audience.
Its dramatic pacing and slightly antiquated effects may appear quaint in comparison to some modern horror, but there’s no disputing the film’s impact over those who encounter it for the first time.
2. Hereditary (2018)
Writer-director Ari Aster made a huge splash with his feature directorial debut, a dark family drama about the nature of grief couched within a supernatural horror film.
Toni Collette earned a spot in the pantheon of great Oscar snubs with her slowly-ratcheted-up-to-11 performance as befuddled mother Annie, but the movie’s biggest shock came courtesy of… Well, we won’t spoil that here.
3. The Conjuring (2013)
James Wan has established himself as one of the current masters of horror, directing films such as Saw, Dead Silence, Insidious, and this chiller based on the experiences of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens were played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who grounded the great jump scares and freak-out moments with a genuine world-weariness. Wan and his co-stars discovered new dread in traditional genre cliches, resulting in a complex cinematic world that only continues to expand.
