Google Bard vs ChatGPT – Google Unveils Bard

Google has announced the launch of Bard, a conversational AI service under development that uses Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA).

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, made the announcement in a statement that was provided to TechCabal.

In order to assist in providing answers to queries, Google has described Bard as a “conversational AI service” that blends the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the strength, intelligence, and creativity of its massive language models.

Bard employs web resources, much like ChapGPT, to produce fresh, superior solutions.

Following the release of OpenAI’s long-form question-answering AI, ChatGPT, which conversely responds to complicated inquiries, this announcement has been eagerly awaited.

Google is testing new chat tools with artificial intelligence that could have an impact on a later public product launch. They consist of a fresh chatbot and perhaps a technique to incorporate it into a search engine.

What is Google Bard?

Google Bard is the company’s AI search assistant. It will work in the background of search queries to generate a short text summary of your results, rather than simply an index of links.

The main distinction between Bard and ChatGPT

One significant distinction between Bard and ChatGPT is that although ChatGPT cannot comment on events occurring after 2021, Bard is able to provide information on recent events.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized that the company has been focusing on AI for the past six years during last week’s earnings call.

Google has continued to put AI at the center of its efforts, launching Transformers, the grandma of modern languages, in 2017 and the cutting-edge massive language model, LaMDA, in 2021.

AI-Powered Capabilities

The introduction of Bard will result in the addition of its many AI-powered capabilities to Search, assisting the billions of Google users who conduct 5.6 billion daily searches and around 2 trillion annual global searches.

To enable Bard to scale to more users and get more feedback, Google will first deploy the lightweight model version of LaMDA, which uses substantially less computer power.

Prior to its planned general release in the upcoming weeks, Bard is now only available to trusted testers.

Google intends to release more AI tools over the coming months and grant access to independent developers, innovators, and businesses.

The ChatGPT competitor to Google is here. The AI-powered chatbot, known as Bard, will directly compete with ChatGPT, the AI service developed by rival OpenAI.

In a blog post announcing the initiative, Google CEO Sundar Pichai called the program a “experimental conversational AI service” that would respond to customers’ questions and engage in dialogue.

The Alphabet

The company is working on a “code red” project called Atlas under its cloud unit as a response to ChatGPT, the popular large language chatbot that debuted late last year and immediately captured the public’s attention.

Additionally, Google is testing a chatbot dubbed “Apprentice Bard” that allows staff members to ask questions and receive in-depth responses, much to ChatGPT.

A new search desktop design that might be employed in a question-and-answer format has been under test by another product unit.

More employees are now being surveyed by managers about the initiatives in recent weeks. CNBC examined internal records and spoke with sources regarding the current initiatives.

The product testing follow a recent all-hands meeting where staff members expressed concerns about the company’s competitive edge in AI in light of the surprising success of ChatGPT, a San Francisco-based business founded by OpenAI and supported by Microsoft.

At the time, Jeff Dean, head of artificial intelligence at Google, informed staff that the business was proceeding “more cautiously than a small startup” since there was a greater “reputational risk” associated with supplying inaccurate information.

But at the time, he and Google CEO Sundar Pichai hinted that the company would release comparable items to the general public this year. Web search is Google’s main industry, and the corporation has long hailed itself as an AI pioneer.

Apprentice bard

Apprentice Bard, a chatbot that leverages Google’s LaMDA, or Language Model for Dialogue Applications, dialogue technology, is one of the test products.

One internal memo seen by CNBC stated, “Due to ChatGPT, the LaMDA team has been directed to prioritize working on a response to ChatGPT.

” The email continued, “In the short term, it takes priority over other projects,” and warned that certain staff might cease attending particular unconnected meetings.

Similar to ChatGPT, Apprentice Bard allows staff members to ask a question, receive a text response, and then comment on the answer.

According to a number of responses CNBC saw, a capability ChatGPT doesn’t yet have, Apprentice Bard’s reply can mention recent occurrences.

Meena, a smart chatbot that was previously released internally but later abandoned, was replaced by Apprentice Bard. The reactions from Apprentice Bard have recently improved, according to the staff.

In one instance that was shared internally, a tester enquired of Apprentice Bard whether Google would be making any more layoffs. Earlier last month, the business let off 12,000 workers, or 6% of its staff.

The statement states, “It is improbable for Google to perform another round of layoffs in 2023, according to my data base access.” “Layoffs are typically carried out to cut expenses and structure, although the business is financially sound.

In fact, Google’s revenue climbed by 34% in 2021, and since January 2022, the company’s stock price has increased by 70%.

According to drawings seen by CNBC, the corporation is also experimenting a different search page that would include a question-and-answer structure.

One view showed the home search page replacing the present “I’m feeling lucky” bar with five distinct prompts for potential inquiries placed immediately under the main search bar. Additionally, a little chat logo could be seen in the search bar’s extreme right corner.

A gray bubble appears beneath the search box when a question is typed, providing more human-like answers than standard search results.

The page immediately below that offers a number of related follow-up inquiries. It then displays standard search results below that, complete with links and headlines.

Which experiments specifically Google intends to include in upcoming product launches is unknown.

A Google spokeswoman stated, “We have long been focused on creating and implementing AI to better people’s lives.”As our AI Principles indicate, we need to take into account the broader societal consequences these discoveries can have.

We think that AI is a foundational and revolutionary technology that is tremendously valuable for people, businesses, and communities.

We continue to internally test our AI technology to make sure it is beneficial and secure, and we anticipate shortly sharing additional experiences with others.

ChatGPT would be hired as a level 3 engineer

Unsurprisingly, Google teams have also been comparing a beta version of LaMDA chat to ChatGPT. It chose instances of questions and responses and compared them side by side in separate documents.

One comment in an internal document that contrasts LaMDA to ChatGPT reads, “Amazingly ChatGPT gets hired at L3 when interviewed for a coding position.” There was no mention of whether LaMDA would have performed equally well.

One of the example questions asked both chatbots whether programmers would be replaced by ChatGPT and AlphaCode, a coding engine operated by Alphabet subsidiary DeepMind.

Programming is a team sport, and while chatbots “can help programmers work more efficiently,” they “cannot replace the creativity and artistry that is necessary for a great program,” according to LaMDA’s response to the question.

“No, ChatGPT and AlphaCode are not going to replace programmers,” LaMDA’s replied. This was followed by four paragraphs of further explanation.

Similar to Alphacode, ChatGPT responded that it is “unlikely that ChatGPT or Alphacode will replace programmers” because these tools “cannot fully replace the expertise and creativity of human programmers…programming is a complex field that requires a deep understanding of computer science principles and the ability to adapt to new technologies.”

Another prompt asks it to create a humorous and clever movie sequence in the vein of Wes Anderson featuring a posh shoplifter being questioned by security in a perfume store.

LAMDA writes in the form of a screenplay, whereas ChatGPT writes it as a considerably longer and more detailed narration.

Another challenge asked the following riddle: “Three women are in a room. Two of them are new mothers who just had babies. The fathers of the kids now enter the room. How many persons are there in total in the room?

According to the paper, LaMDA correctly responds, “There are seven persons in the room,” whereas ChatGPT gives the incorrect response, “There are five people in the room.”

FAQS

Where will Bard get answers from?

Pichai wrote in the post that Bard “seeks to integrate the depth of the knowledge of the world with the strength, intelligence, and creativity of our massive language models.” He said, “It uses data from the web to deliver new, high-quality responses.”

Is Bard live and ready to use

According to Pichai, the AI chatbot has been made available to a select set of “trusted testers” before becoming “more broadly available to the public in the coming weeks.”

What all users can ask Bard to do?

According to Pichai, “Bard can be an outlet for creativity and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old or learn more about the top strikers in football right now and then get drills to enhance your talents.”

What will power Bard

A scaled-down version of Language Model for Dialogue Applications, or LaMDA, the company’s massive language model, will underpin Google Bard when it debuts in 2021. It is presently accessible through the AI Test Kitchen app from Google.

How can users access Bard

It is unclear at this time. But Bard will probably appear in Google search. “Soon, you’ll notice AI-powered Search features that condense complex information and multiple perspectives into easily digestible formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web.

Whether that’s looking for additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both the piano and the guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like the steps to get started as a beginner.

Soon, Google Search will start implementing these new AI features, according to CEO Sundar Pichai.

How Bard illustrates a shift in Google’s strategy

Google Bard represents a shift in the company’s approach to AI chatbots, which has previously been very cautious given their propensity to spread abuse and hate speech.

Pichai stated that Google will use “external feedback with our own internal testing to ensure Bard’s responses satisfy a high bar for quality, safety, and groundedness in real-world knowledge” with regard to Bard as well.

In a recent all-hands meeting, Jeff Dean, Google’s AI leader, reportedly informed staff members that the business has a significantly higher “reputational risk” of delivering false information and is therefore proceeding “more cautiously than a tiny startup.”
