Elden Ring is a Bandai Namco Entertainment-published open-world ARPG created by FromSoftware.

Hidetaka Miyazaki directed the game, which was built in partnership with New York Times best-selling author George R. R. Martin, who invented the mythos of the Lands Between.

It is a PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4, Xbox Series X, and Playstation 5 game.

It went live on February 25th, 2022.

What is Elden Ring?

Elden Ring is an ARPG that introduces a new open-world with a greater globe scale that allows for freedom of exploration.

According to Miyazaki, it also has “a broad array of weaponry, spells, and ways to confront foes with the strategies that suit you.”

Elden Ring is a third-person action RPG set in a dark fantasy world centered on the Elden Ring. According to legend, the ring had unfathomable power “that which commanded the stars, giving existence its greatest splendor,” and that it has been shattered by something or someone. This results in the world’s disintegration and deterioration, the sky burning, and similarities to the collapsing sun of the Souls universe.

Elden Ring review: Gameplay

It’s easy to describe it, but it’s more difficult to express the specific experience of playing it. Elden Ring is an open-world action/RPG in general.

You make your own character and then go exploring, defeating a range of conventional adversaries and terrifying bosses along the way. You can find new gear and equipment; level up your characteristics to improve your melee, ranged, or magical fighting; and mount a horse to explore the dark-fantasy Lands Between.

Elden Rings is a harrowing experience.

On the other hand, mastering the battle is quite fulfilling.

If you’ve ever played a Souls game (or Bloodborne), the gameplay should feel very familiar at this point.

One aspect of the experience is creating your ideal character by allocating traits and upgrading equipment; another is mastering the gratifying and lethal battle.

Elden Ring, like most From games, is an extremely difficult experience.

Most foes can kill you in a few strikes, whereas bosses usually only need one or two.

Foes will swarm you from behind cover, seize you from behind cover, rise up from the ground, or swoop down from above.

Your healing options are restricted, and nothing happens instantly, from melee strikes to magical missiles to life-saving dodges.

On the other hand, mastering the combat seems both fair and immensely fulfilling.

Stats and stats are important in your Elden Ring success, but so are your personal abilities, which will organically develop as you play.

A New Fantasy World

Journey Through the Lands Between is a new fantasy universe created by Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the popular Dark Souls video game series, and George R. R. Martin, author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy novel A Song of Ice and Fire.

Discover the secrets of the Elden Ring’s power. Meet opponents with interesting backstories, personalities with their own unique motivations for assisting or impeding your journey, and terrifying beasts.

World Exploration in the Lands Between

It has large imaginative vistas and gloomy, complex tunnels that are seamlessly interwoven.

Explore the gorgeous world on foot or horseback, alone or with other players, and fully immerse yourself in the verdant plains, stifling marshes, spiraling mountains, frightening castles, and other locations of grandeur never before seen in a FromSoftware product.

Elden Ring platforms

It is a video game that is available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

How to Purchase/Download Elden Ring

The official game is available for download through the Steam shop or the Bandai Namco website.

Genre-Defining Gameplay

In FromSoftware’s sophisticated action-RPG, create your character and establish your playstyle by playing with a vast range of weapons, magical abilities, and skills available across the world.

Charge into battle, use stealth to eliminate adversaries one by one, or summon teammates for assistance.

There are numerous options available to you as you pick how to approach exploration and warfare.

When you explore its castles, dungeons, tunnels, and other enclosed regions, it fires on all cylinders.

These locations have the same feel as Dark Souls games, requiring you to uncover every hidden path and shortcut while keeping the overall environment somewhat confined.

If you look hard enough, you can find everything.

When you get out into the wide world, however, everything feels a little less polished.

Sites of Grace (safe spots, similar to Bonfires in earlier games) occasionally — but not usually — show the way to the next plot goal, but where you go beyond that is entirely up to you. Some mini-dungeons and overland regions need significantly higher levels than their neighboring narrative counterparts, while others are key sources of materials and experience for impending story monsters. Expect a great deal of trial and error, as well as unnecessary fatalities.

You’ll also be able to go throughout the world on horseback, which is a mixed blessing. Torrent, your summonable steed, moves rapidly and can double-jump. This opens up a lot of new possibilities for investigation, but it frequently leads to “was I really supposed to go there?” dead ends.

Mounted combat is also a rather chaotic affair, with random hit-and-run strikes replacing the perfectly honed, systematic punches of foot fighting. A few mounted boss fights are thrilling, such as chasing a fire-breathing dragon over an open field. They are, however, the exception rather than the rule.

Some dungeons are quite well-hidden, and I’m curious how many people will find them without a walkthrough. Its open environment crosses the line between “secretive” and “aimless,” and frequently falls on the wrong side.

Elden Ring review: Story and Setting

George R.R. Martin, the acclaimed science fiction author, helped write Elden Ring’s mythology, and his impact on the game is palpable. The Lands Between is a complex, multifaceted fantasy.

The Lands Between are a complex, sophisticated fantasy world with a complicated cast of individuals and a sense that the existing quo is not unchangeable.

Depending on your gameplay choices, you could end up with one of several Elden Ring endings.

Elden Ring’s open universe skirts the line between “secretive” and “aimless,” and frequently ends up on the wrong side.

The plot isn’t as crucial in this game as it is in many other From games because the environment and characters leave a stronger effect.

Still, if you’re curious, the Elden Ring is a powerful artifact that was shattered into four pieces following a horrific conflict known as the Shattering.

Four demigods each grabbed a piece of the Ring, and as a result, each became dark and twisted.

You take on the role of a Tarnished, an immortal undead warrior capable of defeating the demigods, reshaping the ring, and becoming an Elden Lord.

Elden Ring: Visuals and Sound

From the shimmering golden leaves of distant Erdtrees to the blood-flecked rings in a suit of armor, it is a stunning game. While it isn’t the most graphically ambitious title (perhaps due to the fact that it spans two console generations), it has a memorable graphics style, with suitably horrific opponent designs and striking architecture in each level.

The sound design is good as well, with music that goes large and bold for boss fights but stays quiet elsewhere. In line with the game’s muted tone, the voice acting is appropriately off-kilter. Bandai Namco has yet to reveal the voice cast; however the actress who plays the wicked Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon is a remarkable performer, perfectly conveying the character’s craziness and hatred.

It’s worth mentioning that the load times you’ll encounter on console will vary greatly depending on platform. Load times on the PS5 are all under 10 seconds, however on the Xbox Series X, they can often exceed 20 seconds. Overall, it’s a small point, but if you have the choice, the PS5 is the platform to use.

Elden Ring Issues

Many PC players have complained about a number of concerns now that Elden Ring has been released into the wild.

These include stuttering frame rates, adversaries disappearing, and the Easy Anti-Cheat software refusing to activate.

During my review, I came across some of these concerns.

Some of these I was able to handle; others remain.

If you’ve encountered similar troubles, read our page on Elden Ring PC Problems.

Most of these will require an official FromSoftware patch to be addressed, however you can troubleshoot a handful yourself.

The PC version was also subject to a hack, in which invading gamers may inject hostile code into your save file and corrupt it.

However, FromSoftware has since fixed the problem.

Elden Ring Switch?

The game also offers a few new gameplay concepts, such as the ability to call Spirit Ashes and ride a steed.

Unfortunately, Nintendo Switch owners cannot play the game because it is only available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation devices.

Why isn’t Elden Ring on Switch? To really test the game’s scalability, the developers will need to sit down and test a port out.

The reason Elden Ring might not make it to Switch has less to do with technology and more to do with overall support.

So yet, only one From Soft game has appeared on Nintendo’s handheld: Dark Souls Remastered.

Let’s get right to the point: No, Elden Ring is not technically a Dark Souls game because it is not a sequel, prequel, or spin-off of Dark Souls.

Will Elden Ring have classes?

Elden Ring contains ten starting classes from which the player can choose at the start of the game.

These classes are all built on distinct archetypes, which will strongly influence how the character develops, including which traits they will naturally excel or struggle with.

Skyrim inherits the beloved legacy of Morrowind and Oblivion, which established The Elder Scrolls franchise as a series of superb RPGs for a long time.

Skyrim simply broke through that barrier.

Elden Ring, on the other hand, inherits the legacy of Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and other games that came before it.

Why is Elden Ring so popular?

Crafting, leveling up, and combat trees are all available in the open world. Button presses do the same functions, and big-budget gaming has melted into a bland, homogenized mass. Elden Ring has grown in popularity by honing its fundamental promise and offering something radically distinct from its competitors.

Is Elden Ring pay to win?

While some have criticized it for being pay-to-win, “Lost Ark” is still free to play, giving it an advantage in terms of player acquisition against “Elden Ring” (which costs $60). Is Elden Ring available for PS4?

Don’t worry, despite appearing to be quite “next-gen,” Elden Ring is available on PS4.

While there may be the occasional graphical or performance tradeoff between PS4 and PS5, the game still performs rather well.

Millicent Elden Ring

Millicent is an NPC in Elden Ring who has a quest line that players can complete to obtain valuable stuff.

Conclusion

Elden Ring is not the flawless game that many Dark Souls fans may have hoped for.

While incorporating open-world elements into the popular series structure yields a few amazing moments, it also stretches the game in too many directions. If Dark Souls is a well-oiled grandfather clock, Elden Ring is a smartwatch: packed with functionality but lacking in polish.

Nonetheless, it  meets the majority of its objectives.

Dark Souls and open-world design aren’t a perfect match, but From does a good job of bringing the two together, delivering an interesting world to explore and plenty of cool animals to kill along the way.

Just enjoy the large dungeons while you can; once you return to the open field, there’s a lot of empty space between you and the next one.
