Discovery Plus is a streaming app that allows you to watch all of your favorite Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, Food Network, and HGTV shows in one place.
The service also includes a number of brand-new, exclusive programming that is not available anywhere else.
Subscribers have access to over 55,000 episodes and 2,500 programs.
If you enjoy reality television, wildlife documentaries, cooking shows, and true-crime series, you should subscribe to Discovery+.
We’ve broken down some of the fundamentals of Discovery+ below to help you decide if it’s a suitable fit for your requirements.
What is Discovery Plus?
Discovery Plus is the most recent service to enter streaming warfare.
The platform went live in the United States on January 4 and is the streaming home for Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, HGTV, and Food Network shows.
There are also dozens of new Discovery+ Originals and convenient 24/7 streaming channels for popular shows.
Discovery Plus subscriptions cost $5 per month with advertising or $7 per month with commercial-free streaming.
What Is on Discovery Plus
Discovery Plus has a large library of material from 14 different networks, including Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, Food Network, HGTV, ID, A&E, History, Lifetime, OWN, Travel, Science Network, and others.
How Much is Discovery Plus?
Discovery Plus has two plans: an ad-supported plan for $5 per month and an ad-free plan for $7 per month.
New subscribers can obtain their first two months of the ad-supported plan for $2 for a limited period. The agreement will expire on July 31.
If you have Verizon, you may be eligible for an even better offer. Select Verizon customers can get up to 12 months of ad-free Discovery+ access for free.
The one-year promotion is valid with Verizon’s Play More or Get More Unlimited plans.
Meanwhile, six months are included with the Unlimited, Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, Above Unlimited, Do More Unlimited, and Start Unlimited programs.
Student discounts are also available from Discovery+. For $3 per month, students at approved American colleges can acquire an ad-supported membership.
How to get Discovery Plus
If you want to try Discovery+, you may do so through the Discovery Plus website or as an add-on to an existing Amazon Prime subscription.
Despite the fact that Discovery+ no longer offers a free trial through its website, Prime members who join up for the service as an add-on channel can still obtain a seven-day trial.
Which Devices Support Discovery Plus?
Discovery Plus is compatible with iOS and Android mobile devices, as well as Apple TV, Android/Google TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung smart TVs, Vizio smart TVs, Xbox consoles, Chromecast, and web browsers.

What can I watch on Discovery Plus?
Discovery Plus has a large library of material from 14 different networks, including Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, Food Network, HGTV, ID, A&E, History, Lifetime, OWN, Travel, Science Network, and others.
Popular shows in the schedule include “90 Day Fiance,” “Ghost Adventures,” “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives,” “Chopped,” “Property Brothers,” “Deadliest Catch,” and “Dirty Jobs,” and many others.
Discovery+ adds new episodes of currently showing shows the same day they premiere on a Discovery network.
Original shows created especially for Discovery+ can also be viewed online.
“Bobby and Giada in India,” “American Detective with Lt. Joe Kenda,” “90 Day: The Single Life,” and other Discovery+ Originals are available.
Many of these exclusive series features prominent Discovery family network personalities as well as celebrities such as Ludacris, Melissa McCarthy, and Martha Stewart.
There is also a new feature called “Discovery Plus Channels.”
This option allows subscribers to watch live feeds of select series like “House Hunters,” “Fixer Upper,” and “Chopped” 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Is Discovery Plus Merging with HBO Max?
AT&T announced plans to merge its WanerMedia arm with Discovery in May 2021. WarnerMedia’s popular brands include Warner Bros., HBO, CNN, and TNT.
The transaction unites all of Warner’s entertainment assets and Discovery’s vast collection of media brands under the banner of “Warner Bros. Discovery.”
Discovery revealed intentions to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into a single streaming service at some time in the future on March 14.
The company wants to provide a package option before the services are fully integrated.
A precise release date for an HBO Max and Discovery+ combo has not yet been revealed.
Similarly, it is unknown when the combined HBO Max and Discovery+ service will be available.
For the time being, both services will be provided independently.
Is Discovery Plus worth it?
The value of a Discovery+ subscription is primarily determined by your viewing preferences.
After spending some time with the service, we believe the low price offers Discovery+ an appealing alternative for viewers of reality TV, cooking shows, nature documentaries, true crime, and other nonfiction programs.
It’s also a cost-effective option if you’re searching for a supplementary streaming service to support another program you use as your primary streaming platforms, such as Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, Disney Plus, or Hulu.
Discovery Plus Shows
What shows are available through Discovery+?
Popular shows in the schedule include “90 Day Fiance,” “Ghost Adventures,” “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives,” “Chopped,” “Property Brothers,” “Deadliest Catch,” and “Dirty Jobs,” and many others.
Discovery+ adds new episodes of currently showing shows the same day they premiere on a Discovery network.
Discovery Plus Price, Plans, and Deals
Discovery Plus is $5 for ad-supported viewing and $7 for commercial-free streaming.
Each package includes a seven-day free trial.
Verizon is also providing up to 12 months of free Discovery+ service to eligible subscribers.
The ad-free plan is included in the promotion, which is available to new Fios users, new 5G internet customers, and all unlimited phone plan customers.
Unlike some other services, Discovery+ only provides monthly plans, therefore there are no savings for paying for the entire year in advance.
The firm does, however, provide gift cards for 12 months ($83.75) or six months ($41.75) of its ad-free plan.
Discovery Plus Features
Content Library
Discovery+ recognizes its niche, with a large collection of episodes aimed at viewers of reality TV, wildlife shows, cuisine, true crime, and education.
People who enjoy scripted dramas and comedies, on the other hand, will have to search elsewhere.
Discovery+is exclusively a service for Discovery network lovers, and its catalog provides a lot of value in that regard.
The service is jam-packed with legendary titles drawn from all of Discovery’s brands and networks, including “Dirty Jobs,” “The Crocodile Hunter,” “Mythbusters,” and “Unwrapped.” A slew of new Discovery Plus Originals are also available, including “Cocktails and Tall Tales,” “Luda Can’t Cook,” and “Monster Garage.”
The original episodes, in particular, have innovative concepts, such as rapper Ludacris learning to cook various foods.
Overall, the schedule includes a solid range of quality series based on the home, food, and history.
We identified 91 programs classified as “Discovery Plus Originals,” either with full episodes or trailers indicating they will be available shortly.
However, not every original program was in the Discovery+ Originals category, as we discovered at least 12 under the platform’s Magnolia Network button (rebrand of DIY Network).
Interface
The Discovery+ interface works well enough, but it lacks any distinguishing features and can feel heavy and difficult to manage.
It’s especially difficult to find the platform’s 24/7 streaming channels, which aren’t conveniently located in the sidebar or main menu.
The platform’s sidebar includes the essentials for viewing the catalog, such as a button for browsing shows, a tab for saving programs (“My List”), and a search box.
The “Browse” button allows you to search for content by channel as well as category, such as “True Crime” and “Lifestyle.”
To access the 24/7 channels, scroll down a little on the “For You” tab.
Rows for the platform’s thematic collections can also be found here.
The 24/7 channels are a fantastic addition for binge-watchers, allowing you to watch non-stop episodes of “House Hunters,” “Property Brothers,” and “90 Day Fiancé” — I only wish they were easier to find.
The Discovery Plus interface’s useful recommendation tool is one of its redeeming aspects.
When you visit a show’s main page, you can explore up to 20 additional series recommendations, making it simple to find comparable programs you might enjoy.
I was hoping that the platform’s “My List” function would allow me to conveniently keep all of my favorite content in one spot, but it turns out that this option does not allow you to save individual episodes.
Aside from a limited “Recently Watched” area (available only through the “For You” page), there isn’t a method to queue up specific episodes I wish to watch over the course of a few hours.
This complicates the experience because I must go back and search through the series to find episodes.
Format support
Discovery Plus does feature certain 4K titles for subscribers who have the requisite equipment, however, these programs are difficult to find because there is no dedicated 4K category in the main menu.
To find this content, you must search “Ultra HD” on the platform. After you do this, the results will show an “Ultra HD” tab.
When you click on a 4K title, a “UHD” icon will display on its page to indicate that it is available in 4K. However, the icon may not appear on all devices.
While most UHD programming is limited to nature programs like “Planet Earth II” and BBC’s “Dynasties,” I was surprised to find 4K quality programs like “NASA Mars Landing,” “Misfit Garage,” and “American Titans.”
Discovery Plus, unlike Netflix and other popular 4K services, does not offer HDR.
Devices and features
With the exception of PlayStation devices, Discovery Plus is compatible with the majority of media players and smart TV platforms.
While Discovery Plus is still in its early stages and will most likely add new features during 2021, there are some clear flaws that I hope it will address.
One of these is the absence of offline downloads, which makes Discovery Plus the only major streaming service that lacks this functionality.
Aside from that limitation, Discovery Plus is on par with other platforms due to its 4K content and capability for up to four concurrent streams (just like Disney Plus). Its entry-level service is also one of the most affordable streaming solutions, costing only $5 per month. This is similar to Apple TV Plus and Peacock Premium.
Should you subscribe to Discovery Plus?
Discovery Plus’ inexpensive pricing makes it an excellent choice for viewers of reality television, cooking shows, wildlife documentaries, and other factual programs.
It’s also a cost-effective option if you’re searching for a supplementary streaming service to augment your major streaming platforms, such as Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, Disney Plus, or Hulu.
Personally, I’d add an ad-supported Discovery Plus subscription to a Disney Plus package.
For a total of $19 a month, you’ll get scripted series and movies from Hulu and Disney Plus, sports from ESPN+, and nonfiction programs from Discovery.
Even with advertisements, Discovery Plus is worthwhile for cable channel enthusiasts.
Even if there are hiccups with the interface, the unique programming, in addition to its huge on-demand library, may provide hours of amusement.
Pros: Diverse programming for nonfiction TV aficionados, perfect for binge-watching, relatively economical, and a plethora of original shows
Cons: The user interface is clumsy, there is no way to queue and store individual episodes, there is no offline viewing, and there is no HDR support.

Conclusion
Discovery Plus is still in its early stages, giving it time to iron out its shortcomings, particularly its limited “My List” function and lack of downloads.
These problems make it impossible to fully study the repertoire of episodes and documentaries.
Beyond these flaws, Discovery Plus networks excel at what they do best: provide entertaining and instructive programming about our homes, lives, history, and the natural world.
Fans of scripted TV dramas and comedies should seek elsewhere, but shows like “Guy’s Grocery Games,” “Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations,” and “Ghost Adventures: Cecil Hotel” are binge-worthy adventures for anyone sick of fictional dramas.
