Cricket Wireless – If you want to save money on your cell phone bill, you should consider Cricket Wireless as a provider.

In this article, I’ll go over Cricket Wireless’ plans and pricing, as well as how to get started and what to expect from the service.

I signed up for Cricket Wireless for 30 days in order to test the service. I’ve also compared over 70 different phone plans to see how Cricket stacks up.

What is Cricket Wireless?

Cricket Wireless is an AT&T-owned American wireless service provider. It serves ten million wireless subscribers in the United States.

Leap Wireless International established Cricket Wireless in March 1999.

In March 2014, AT&T acquired Leap Wireless International and later merged Cricket Wireless operations with Aio Wireless.

As a wireless service provider brand, Cricket Wireless competes primarily with T-Metro, Mobile’s Dish’s Boost Mobile, and Verizon’s Visible. Cricket Wireless was formerly known as Cricket Liberty.

What to Know Before Signing Up for Cricket Wireless

Cricket Wireless is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that provides cellular network access through AT&T. It’s a dependable service provider, and the American Customer Satisfaction Index named it one of the best full-service MVNOs earlier this year.

Cricket Wireless is also one of AT&T’s best MVNOs, and its unlimited plan is one of the best multiline phone plans. Plans start at $30 per line per month for 5GB of high-speed data. Buying a SIM card online is simple and free, but there is a $25 activation fee if you visit a Cricket Wireless store in person. As a result, I recommend that you activate your service online.

That’s exactly what I did when I tried out Cricket Wireless’ 5GB plan for 30 days to investigate its coverage, call and text performance, customer service, and other features.

More information about Cricket Wireless is available below, including what plans are available, how reliable the service is, and whether or not you should consider it as your mobile carrier.

Cricket Wireless Plans and Pricing

Cricket Wireless has four different plans to choose from.

You can join any plan with as few as one line and as many as five lines for additional discounts.

The table below shows the monthly cost of each Cricket Wireless plan per line.

Prices include autopay where applicable; taxes and fees are also included.

 1 Line2 Lines3 Lines4 Lines5 Lines
5GB$30$30$30$30$30
10GB$35$35$30$28$26
Unlimited$50$40$30$25$25
Unlimited + 15GB Mobile Hotspot$55$45$37$33$32

In the United States, all of these plans include unlimited talk, text, and picture messaging, as well as HD voice and Wi-Fi calling.

Cricket Wireless plans also include 5G access on compatible devices and unlimited data at 128 Kbps after your monthly data usage limit has been reached.

Cricket Wireless’ unlimited plan is worth noting: it costs $25 per line with a maximum of four lines.

That means all four lines will receive unlimited high-speed data for a total of $100! Cricket Wireless earned a spot in our top picks for the best multiline phone plan with this plan.

Customers on this unlimited plan will have access to unlimited high-speed data; however, slow data speeds may occur when the network is congested. Cricket Wireless’ top-tier unlimited data plan promises premium data that will not slow down based on usage.

Cricket Wireless’ most expensive unlimited plan is also the only one that includes mobile hotspot. It comes with 15GB of mobile hotspot data, 150GB of cloud storage, and a complimentary HBO Max subscription (with ads).

Cricket Wireless did not impose any charges or additional fees.

By purchasing my SIM card online, I was able to avoid the activation fee. The SIM card does cost $9.99 online, but there is a $25 activation fee if you go to a Cricket Wireless store.

Cricket Wireless’ plans are all monthly prepaid. There are no long-term commitments or overage fees. Visit Cricket Wireless’ website to learn more about each plan.

Activation Process

To avoid the $25 activation fee, I recommend switching to Cricket Wireless and activating your service online.

The procedure is quick and simple. In this section, I’ll walk you through the steps I took when I first tried out the 5GB plan. I’ll also explain how I got a month of service for less than $16!

To begin, I went to Cricket Wireless’ website and selected the 5GB monthly plan. Then I had the option of purchasing a Cricket Wireless phone (some are even free) or bringing my own device. I decided to bring my own.

Then I entered my device’s IMEI number to see if it was compatible.

After confirming that my phone was compatible, I chose the type of SIM card I’d require. Voice and data or data only, new customer or current customer, and porting my old phone number or getting a new one were all options.

Online, the SIM kit costs $9.99. I was prompted to enter my ZIP code after adding it to my shopping cart.

Then I could add another line or proceed to checkout. The monthly plan cost $30, plus $9.99 for the SIM card and free next-business-day shipping.

After taxes, my bill came to $40.74. The taxes were only applied to the SIM card; the monthly plan rate was $30 going forward.

Fortunately, I was able to find a $25 cash back offer from my Chase credit card on Cricket Wireless, so I was able to test the phone plan for only $15.74 total!

Before switching phone service providers, make sure to check offers on your cash back credit cards for potential additional savings.

During this process, I could also choose whether or not to enroll in autopay.

I placed my order after verifying the information and agreeing to the terms and conditions.

The following day, I received an email with a shipment confirmation. I did receive my SIM card in the mail the following business day.

I put in my Cricket Wireless SIM card, turned on my phone, and went to cricketwireless.com/activate. I had to select my device type, purchase location, and the fact that I am a new customer there.

I was then able to activate my service by entering my order number and Cricket phone number. This information was included in my initial email order confirmation.

I then restarted my phone and was able to make a test call.

Call and Text Performance

I used Cricket Wireless’ service for 30 days, making and receiving phone calls as well as sending and receiving text messages.

I had consistently reliable, clear service with no dropped calls or undelivered text messages during the month I tested Cricket Wireless’s service. However, service can differ from one location to the next.

Cricket Wireless offers nationwide coverage and access to AT&T’s network. Check out the Cricket Wireless coverage map to see if the network is available in your area.

You can check if you’ll have service in your area by entering your address or ZIP code on Cricket Wireless’ website.

You can also see what types of coverage are available, such as 4G/LTE and 5G data.

Data Speeds

Cricket Wireless supports AT&T’s 4G/LTE and 5G networks. Based on my experience and AT&T’s coverage map, you should have reliable data access with this MVNO.

Before switching to Cricket Wireless, enter your address on its coverage map online to ensure you’ll be covered.

Because this is the network that Cricket Wireless uses, you can also look at AT&T’s coverage map to get a better idea of service availability in your area.

Cricket Wireless will most likely provide you with average download speeds in addition to good coverage.

I tested the data speeds of Cricket Wireless using speediest.net by Ookla.

The average download speed was around 20 Mbps.

I saw the fastest download speed of 31.63 Mbps and the slowest download speed of 12.27 Mbps.

According to Consumer Reports, the minimum speed required for streaming 4K movies and TV shows is 18 Mbps.

For 4K streaming, Netflix recommends a download speed of 25 Mbps.

On Prime, Amazon requires a download speed of at least 8 Mbps for SD video and 40 Mbps for HD video.

According to these figures, Cricket Wireless’ high-speed data is fast enough for most online activities, including streaming SD video.

Unfortunately, Cricket Wireless’ only plan that includes mobile hotspot is its most expensive unlimited data plan.

On the 5GB plan, I was unable to test Cricket Wireless’ mobile hotspot download speeds.

However, using the Cricket Wireless app, I was able to easily track my mobile data usage throughout the month.

The plan I tried included 5GB of high-speed data per month, but there are several other options available.

If you choose a non-unlimited plan, you will experience slower speeds once you have reached your monthly high-speed data limit.

Cricket Wireless Customer Service

A phone carrier must provide excellent customer service.

Unfortunately, it appears that nearly all major corporations are struggling with it these days.

Whether it’s long wait times or unhelpful representatives, dealing with phone service providers’ customer service can be a chore.

I contacted Cricket Wireless via phone and online chat to see how long I’d have to wait for service and what kind of service I’d get.

To contact Cricket Wireless, go to the website or mobile app and chat with an agent, or call 1-800-274-2538. Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST, or Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST. Each night, online chat representatives are available until 11 p.m.

When I called Cricket Wireless’ customer service number, I was informed that wait times were longer than usual. Finally, I had to wait about seven minutes to speak with a customer service representative on the phone. The automated messaging system can be difficult to use, so I simply asked to speak with a representative whenever I was offered automated assistance.

However, I was connected with a live agent in less than two minutes via online chat.

The automated chat system was also a little difficult to use, but the agent I was connected with was knowledgeable and courteous.

Methodology

I highlighted the key factors that I would be investigating before I began testing phone plans.

This way, I’d be able to compare phone plans accurately and get a full picture of what to expect from the service.

Here are the key points I considered when evaluating each phone plan:

  • Length of Time. I tested each phone plan for 30 days to assess network reliability and gather service feedback from friends and family.
  • Registering. I signed up for each phone plan myself in order to document the process of getting started, testing phone compatibility or bringing your own device, receiving the SIM card, and activation.
  • Reliability. I used my personal AT&T line as a baseline to determine how frequently the tested phone plan had service and to record any dropped calls/undeliverable text messages.
  • Service. I made/received at least 15 phone calls and sent/received at least 15 text messages during the month. I also used speedtest.net to test the phone’s data speed.
  • Customer service. During my time testing each phone service, I contacted customer service via every available method to determine which method is best, how long it took to reach a person, and how helpful the experience was.
Things to Consider

If you’re thinking about switching to Cricket Wireless, consider the following:

  • Is AT&T’s network reliable in your area? Before switching, you can check the coverage maps of Cricket Wireless and AT&T to see if you’ll have service in your area.
  • Does your current phone work with Cricket Wireless? You can check the compatibility of your phone online. Cricket Wireless has phones starting at $0, but you can save even more by bringing your own phone and opting for a lower-cost plan.
  • Do you feel at ease activating the service online? Cricket Wireless charges a $25 in-store activation fee whether you bring your own phone or purchase a new one. You can avoid this fee if you buy your SIM card online.

  • After all, AT&T owns this carrier. If you live in an area that is not covered by the 5G network, you will be charged for roaming. Data may be slower here than elsewhere. Consider visiting cricketwireless.com/map.html to see if your area is covered by the 5G network.
  • This carrier does not disappoint when it comes to customer service. To begin, this service provider has many brick-and-mortar retail stores located throughout the United States where you can get the assistance you require.
